Army chief promises revival of Pakistan hockey

Army chief General Raheel Sharif vowed on Sunday to revive Pakistan's identity as a sporting nation and bring back the glory days of the national sport.

The army chief was attending the final of the first Chief of Army Staff Hockey Cup in Rawalpindi.

“Lost glory in sports, especially in hockey will be brought back,” General Raheel said, according to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).

National Bank won the first Chief of the Army Staff Hockey Cup by defeating Pakistan International Airlines 2-0.


Meanwhile, Muhammad Imran of Pakistan Army received the trophy for the top scorer of the tournament with nine goals. Best goalkeeper award was won by Imran Butt of PIA while the tournament's best player award was bagged by Rizwan Sr of Pakistan Army.

General Raheel gave away the trophy, medals and cash prizes to the winning teams of the tournament.

A cash prize of Rs1 million was given to the winning National Bank team, while Rs0.7 million cash prize was given to the runners up PIA team, and Rs0.5 million to the Pakistan Army hockey team for finishing on the third place.
