Iran’s film industry often reminds me of the golden age of our very own PTV dramas. Given that the best plays were made during the times of dictators makes me wonder if the people of this region actually produce their best work in the time of repression. Today’s Pakistan is considerably freer but, boy, hardly is this reflected in our entertainment industry. Recently, I was forced to watch a few episodes of a rather successful television series whose name reminds one of a local brand of contraceptive. Amazing as it may seem, the producers put a real effort in salvaging a toxic relationship. See the formula again, and a sad one, too.
Back to Indian cinema. I was telling you I don’t have much of an appetite for Bollywood. But for a few years, I have developed a liking for Rajkumar Hirani’s movies. A Chinese friend asked me to watch one of his movies and I am ever so grateful for this recommendation. It is very close to my own observation and experience that the love for knowledge always pays.
Mr Hirani, who has a striking resemblance to our own Tauqir Nasir, has recently made another film, which has easily become the most successful film at the Indian box office. It is called PK. When I initially heard that it is about an alien life form’s arrival on planet earth, I was reluctant to watch it. We South Asians have the eerie belief that whatever comes from above has to reinforce our faith in religion. However, I am glad that I did manage to overcome my reluctance to watch PK. The message in it is of moderation and the alien in it is shown not to have hailed from any distant city of gods.
PK’s role in the story, played by the brilliant Amir Khan, is of an alien who lands on our blue-green planet and is robbed of a device that would have helped him return to his planet. In a very interesting quest to return to his planet, he has to confront the movers and shakers of all major religions in India. Seeing the high claims of being in touch with God himself by a Hindu god-man, PK accuses him of calling a wrong number. This, perhaps, is the strongest metaphor for our times. How many religious scholars of every faith claim to have access to God every day? How can all these claims be true?
The message in the film is important not only for India whose recent developments like the homecoming (ghar wapsi) ceremonies are giving India watchers a headache after the rise and rise of Narendra Modi’s closest allies in the Vishva Hindu Parishad and the Sangh Pariwar. The film’s commercial success in India is proof of the redeeming quality of ordinary Indians and South Asians, who reject radicalism every day. But the message is also vital for societies like Pakistan and Afghanistan that have paid an arm and a leg for having placated extremists at some juncture in their history. Imagine how many wrong numbers are dialled every single day in both these countries. After thanking the maker of the film, I think I will use the metaphor of the wrong number at every chance I get.

Pakistan itself is a wrong number dialed in 1947.
@Razi: Not that Gp65 has indulged in mocking Muslims but you will appreciate that criticising Pakistan & even Muslims is not the same as mocking Islam. Its your choice to condemn India, Indians, Hindus but to speak disparagingly of a religion as a whole- Hinduism in this case-which is also the religion of many of your compatriots, is reprehensible behavior.
@Gp65: With all due respects, the article refers to religion, in Hindustan. The author brings up god-man. and does reflects on religion. Now, then, it so follows that yours truly picked up the thread. never knowing that there will be a tsunami of trolls enlightening and waxing poetic on the hindu religion. Well truth be told, Ah done gone watch Chennai Express now. And done gone follow that with DWDLJ. With Kajol and SRK
@Gp65
Indians like you love to comment on or rather mock anything related to Pakistan and Muslims. So such a deliberately misleading statement that you people come here only to comment on India-related news, which is no more than what your newspapers publish about Pakistan, is not going to hide your real agenda.
@Motiwala: Before you start debating religion, make sure you know something about it. New flash: They are all man-made and so is the concept of "God". The notion of an anthropomorphic God who "speaks" to certain special individuals ("messengers") in certain languages for all time is delusional as it shrinks and encages (thus blasphemes) the very notion of a Supreme being, who created this almost infinite and expanding Universe, including this minuscule speck of a planet. The Laws of Nature apply to all things, living or otherwise, in the entire Universe. "God" is encoded in all creation. However, you are free to believe what you want, as long as you do not try to impose your views on others. Peace!
@Motiwala: "ET moderators please print, just overcome your love for hindu trolls. Who prevent us from having a sane discussion in a Pak. paper."
Your first comment was absolute trolling and was not promoting any discussion sane or otherwise. If Pakistani newspapers did not print so much about India, Indians would not be here commenting on it.
@Motiwala: You have got the number wrong . Hinduism has 330 million Gods and deities and not 34000 that you have mentioned .
@ModiFied: Will go for sheep. as messengers of gods, and grass as messenger of gods. These two can be controlled easily, grass can be mown, and you can have sheep for dinner, anytime. ...Karma...
ET moderators please print, just overcome your love for hindu trolls. Who prevent us from having a sane discussion in a Pak. paper.
@Motiwala : Unlike other religions, for Hindus every human on Earth is a potential messenger of God. We believe that God can convey his message through any of his creations, be it man, woman, animal or plants.
@gtm2012: @Rakib: @Kolsat: Well, why stop at 330 million names. Just make that 400 billion. A nice round figure. May take 500 hundred years to repeat all those name, by countless illierate generations of hindus. Right at the corner of Ganga and Jumna. Is that Banaras? And nobody wants to be an expert on a religion where you have 3400 deities !....Karma...
ET moderators replying to addressed comments. This being a hindu paper, do allow a rebuttal. Your hindu masters won't sanction you.
@Motiwala:
I am certain that the efficient censors at the Tribune will not allow this to pass through their filters, whilst scurrilous comments on the Sanatana Dharma are quite appropriate!
But tell me something, Motiwala and Pitafi?
If Hindus are dialling the wrong number, can it not be also asked in fairness, what about others who claim to be in direct contact with God, including your own sources of inspiration and infallibility? Touch on that and you must kill the questioner, so firm is your grip on idolatry. SO of course you have your idols: are you honest enough to confront them? A book, which is naught but paper and ink, is absolutely an idol. A person and more than one persons, are worshipped as idols. And so much more. Except it is fun to mock others without being honest about one's own attitudes and beliefs.
Mockery and denial is not the equivalent of truth but the path to perdition, as you can see all around you. Who garners more respect on this globe? Adherents of which faith? Craven mockers like Pitafi and Motiwala or what others?
I wonder why this movie is so much darling of Pakistanis, specially among its right wingers like Pitaffi.
Mr. writer, thank you for watching and contributing to Indian economy.
@Kolsat: In the end, Hindu and all the Indian-origin religions refer to an ultimate reality of the Universal One - Brahman. The proliferation of Gods and Goddesses (many unique to different regions) can be seen as products of the essential creativity, celebration, and spirituality of Indian people. Indian religions reflect the abundant fertile soil of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. They also do not share the level of dogmatism inherent in some other faiths.)
@a_writer: I have seen some very good Iranian movies over the years and liked them despite having to read subtitles. Maybe this blog's author is right: Some of the best movies are produced in repressive and regressive regimes as the moviemakers have to be very bright and skillful in criticizing their societies. In "free" countries, need for subtlety and skill is not as compelling, so moviemakers take the easy way: make money by appealing to the masses, rather than edify. Having said that, art that is skillful and subtle and that can delight by opening our eyes to see our world in a new way will always be admired and valued. Bollywood and other Indian -woods (especially Bengal) do produce some good movies once in awhile. (The author could have done without out the snark and false equivalences, however.)
For once agree with you wholeheartedly. I have little patience for movies in general and Bollywood in particular. I was kidnapped, hands and feet bound to watch PK. I must admit it was well made and the message is the need of the day. Yes, Iran does produce some seriously beautiful movies in a very difficult environment.
@Motiwala: A period of silent contemplation may do you some good instead of blabbering about Hinduism of which you obviously know nothing. Nor do you have the humility to ask somebody about the symbolisms & allegorical nature/ spiritual meaning of Hindu iconography.
@Kolsat: You are feeding a troll. Ignore him
@Motiwala: Your comment shows your ignorance about Hindu religion. We do have godmen and women. According to the popular myth Hindu religion has not 3400 but 330 million gods. What ignorant people do not understand is that all these gods are essentially Vishnu and Shiva in different forms and few goddesses. Hindu religion consideres god having male and female qualities and hence we also have goddesses. If you want to crticise Hindus learn about their their religion if you are allowed by the blasphemy police.
This movie has not been released in China so your friend probably did an illegal download as you probably did too. The movie industry of Pakistan is in doldrums because all their intellectual effort is stolen without compensation. Wrong number Mr. Pitafi.
Generally, I don't see eye to eye with Mr.Pitafi on most issues he writes about. But I do have to agree about Indian movies. Among the hundreds produced every year, there is probably one or two worth watching. I agree too that movies from Iran are generally extremely good. I don't get to watch too many Iranian movies. But the few I have watched, every one of them, has been outstanding.
The author says - "The film’s commercial success in India is proof of the redeeming quality of ordinary Indians and South Asians". He's plain wrong. Try anything that is anti-Islam...and we will run out computing power to count the number of fatwas that will be flying around. So, let's call it what it is - the Hindus, in general, are indeed a tolerant lot. The VHP and other groups had a right to feel offended. The expressed their unhappiness. In some cases, things went out of control - probably because of weak policing (result of a lousy govern of past 65 years), but, a few years from now - Modi will fix the government and miscreants will not be able to get away with rowdiness.
Mr Rajkumar Hirani cast a Muslim star to show the hypocrisy of a Hindu god man and and most Indians(except a curmudgeonly few) had a good laugh as what is shown is reality. Could this same film have been made about Mosques and Preachers in Pakistan? This is the essential difference between India and Pakistan. This is why India has progressed and Pakistan has regressed. Pakistan has been dialing wrong numbers for 65 years and continues to do so.
Had no idea there were god-men and god-women in Hindustan. But what can expect, from a country's top religion that has more than 3400 deities ! No pun intended, but you could be reading the names of all these deities until the COWS come home.
"South Asians reject radicalism everyday".
Really?????!!!!!!
Please note the group "South Asians" does not include Pakistanis who are Arabs.
