For the first time in the history of Islamia College University, members of Students Senate took oath in order to play a more effective role in the varsity’s academic and co-curricular activities.

Vice Chancellor Ajmal Khan administered the oath to the 80-member body at the ceremony held at the university’s Roos Keppel Hall on Thursday.

The VC congratulated the newly-appointed senators, saying it is an honour for them to be made senators of the body. Feedback from the students in senate meetings on matters relating to academia would be considered in forming and promoting activities on the campus, he added.

The vice chancellor is the chairman of the senate, whereas Chairman of the Department of Management Sciences, Professor Dr Gohar Zaman, has been appointed as the vice-chairman.

Earlier in his address, Zaman said the senate is a non-political body for which students have been appointed on the basis of their academic merit. “Membership in the senate is open to students from various semesters.”

Hoping the senate will prove to be fruitful, Zaman said it would help the university’s administration improve its activities. Eminent poet and renowned anchor Professor Abaseen Yousafzai was the stage secretary for the event.
