RAWALPINDI: An attack was foiled on Tuesday as a desperate terrorist killed himself with a hand grenade at a police checkpoint on Grand Trunk Road in the jurisdiction of Wah Cantt police station. Officials from the bomb disposal squad told The Express Tribune that the suspected terrorist was not wearing a suicide vest.

A police official manning the checkpoint at the time of the attack said the suspect tried to board a Rawalpindi-bound passenger van when it was stopped. “When the police tried to arrest him, he fled. We fired at him and he hurled a hand grenade at us,” the police official said.

A chase ensued and the police cornered the suspect at a dead end. He then threw himself on top of a hand grenade and detonated it. Five policemen, Iftikhar, Amjid, Nasir, Mehmood and Hussain, were injured in the blast. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan condemned the incident and ordered the police to provide a detailed report.
