Police in riot gear were patrolling a village where Sunday's hours-long rampage and attack occurred in Bihar state, with tensions still high between the majority Hindu and minority Muslim communities.
The attack was triggered by the discovery of the body of a teenage Hindu boy, allegedly murdered by family members of a Muslim girl who objected to the pair's suspected relationship.
"We have identified the attackers and nine accused have been arrested," said Paras Nath, inspector general of police in Muzaffarpur district.
"The hunt is on for others. Three persons were burnt alive," Nath told AFP.
"One accused in the murder of the teenage boy has also been arrested," he added.
The body of 19-year-old Bhartendu Kumar was discovered Saturday in his native village of Saraiya, 102 kilometres from the state capital Patna, after he disappeared days earlier.
A mob armed with sticks and other sharp weapons attacked the house of one of the people suspected by Kumar's family of kidnapping and murdering him, police said.
Rioters set his house on fire, killing three residents, thought to belong to the Muslim community and injuring two others.
Police said 10 adjoining houses were also gutted and 15 vehicles damanged in the violence, which lasted for four hours on Sunday morning.
Couples from different religions in India are often targeted by their families and community members for supposedly bringing "dishonour", sometimes resulting in confrontations and even deadly violence and full-scale riots.
Critics say Hindu hardline groups have become more emboldened since the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party stormed to power at elections in May.
Alongside the 80 percent Hindu majority, Muslims make up 13.4 per cent of India's 1.2 billion population, with Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and other religions accounting for the rest.

@Tranquil: I don't know what agenda ET is working on.
@maaro mullo ko: You can send the muslims to Pakistan, and we will warm heartedly welcome them. But remember, We will never eject the Hindu's living in Pakistan to India. They are living in Pakistan and can live as peaceful citizens.
Now that Modi is in power....I believe incidents like this will become much more frequent.....the “secular“ India was always a joke which now even many indians admit The biggest hypocrite democracy in the world!
@maaro mullo ko:
heheeheheh thanks for showing your true colors and Hats off to The Tribune for publishing such hateful comments
@SA: Which International court? Do you know the meaning of international?
@Sohail: What a joke. These type of jokes are originate from Pakistan
Bad things happens when emotions leads the people, but police has taken action & judiciary will not forgive any culprit unlike your country, BTW Did anyone talked about that poor Hindu boy murdered by Muslim men & that incident triggered violence.
A great example of shining India!
Dear All,
Thanks for your comments about india but the same news had not reflected in Indian news paper my be I may not be noticed either. one thing I have to share here iam not here to do anything like tit for tat and iam ashamed to fight for a religion but one thing which hurts me a lot is 1971 war of pak and Bangladesh in which pak army lashed out 80 % of muslim majority raped all religion women for the sake of religion and language. hindu or muslim Pakistan or india please avoid hatred and make love with everybody. In this world only human created religion to make people obedient and faithful but now religion makes people and breaks them a part
@James: What a senseless comment.
Bihar is becoming a place for religious riots ,and caste riots where high caste Hindus regularly kill low-caste people.Advent of Modi has added fuel to the fire
Negative and irresponsible journalism. By adding the statement that "critics" says BJP got emboldened the editor is implying or fabricating the fact instead of giving unbiased reporting that this is just a result of communal tension which always existed in India no matter BJP was elected or not. And please be fair in assessment that similar communal tensions happen in Pakistan and hundreds of Hindus and Christians killed in just last one year compare to muslims killed in India. I am seriously appalled by the editor to forcefully drag Modi and BJP into this news when it is clearly a communal riot and nothing to do with BJP influencing others or not. @ET. Such irresponsible journalism are as much culpable as mullah giving hate speech in public. Please remember you too have part in resolving the perpetual extremis crisis in Pakistan.
@Raj - USA:
Did you forget to read the word "allegedly" in the news intentionally ? refrain from showing us your typical low level Hindu Mentality
@ibrahim sarwar: Thanks for the compliment. I know you very well understand how worse off your country is right now.
so whats new? the tea boy prime minister of India has cases against him in International courts for crimes against humanity when he was establishing his criminal credentials in Gugrat. In India a politician is as criminal as his Pakistani counterpart, we live in times where good people have vanished and criminals reign supreme..signs of end times.
@Gopeet-UK Aus,NZ,Can,Fr, Germ.: Do you have any proof that the hindus killed the muslim? No. At this time, everything is alleged and all are accused. You can make your own news, all you want. But it will not make any good for you. Let there be an unbiased investigation and judicial process and let the culprits be punished to the maximum when the crime is proved. Let all these be done in an efficient, professional, unbiased manner swiftly. The cases may also be moved to a different State, say West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, etc., so that there is no pressure on the judiciary. The judiciary should also be from a non-muslim and non-hindu community. Do you have a problem with this? I also like to see full media coverage on this in a totally unbiased manner.
@Kamal Khan: Read this news. This is what this news in ET says. In any case, I would like that everything come out in the open, be it fault, insanity, intolerance, extremism, or anything else of any community. Everything should come out in the open in a totally unbiased manner.
@Raj - USA: Do you have any proof that the Muslims killed the hindu boy? Typical reaction from a hindu. What else can you expect?
@Motiwala: 3 people killed...ur heart is crying loud. I can share the pain of their families. Btw how many times u experienced this pain when french nationals killed...or Bombay massacre happened? Did i cry too? Or u r selective about it?
@Raj - USA:
How quick did you reach to the conclusion that Muslims Killed the Hindu first. Any proof ?
I do not agree with the burning down of muslims. Yes, the muslims killed the hindu boy first and had there been good law enforcement and efficient judiciary, everyone would have felt that justice will be done and would not have taken to awarding punishment on their own. Many decades of political parties supporting muslims for votes even when they were wrong, has led to this situation.
What I would like to see now and what would make me happy is to see that both the killing of the hindu boy by the muslims and the killings of muslims by hindus should be handled together in the trials as one judicial trial. I would also like to see an impartial judge, say a christian or Sikh, handling and deciding the case. The trial should be transparent, efficient, unbiased and swift. Media should cover it objectively and extensively. The vices of both hindus and muslims should be known to all and only this would bring a true realization in both communities of the wrongs that each have been doing. Only such realization would bring reformation in the minds of both communities.
These Hindus are savage people, They can go to any extreme and will never accept their mistakes.
Why is ET not blocking hateful comments from Indians? Meanwhile comments of Pakistanis are often not published!! Indian news papers never publish a comment favoring Pakistan or comments by Pakistanis!! I can only hope PTA takes action and such stuff is not allowed on a pakistani domain !!
@pakistani: Agree with you. This is a hindu newspaper.
@pakistani: " I am going to report these comments to the regulator" Bhayya, a "regulator" is a device that controls voltage, pressure, speed of the fan etc ... U probably will need to look for the Moderator !!!
India incredible indiaaaaa !
@Sohail: "i have many indian friends here i swear most of them say that we don’t want to live in india because of modi and specially now when they are converting muslims and about terrorists activities happening in pakistan we know who is behind them and funding them the problem is our politicians are corrupt & cowards they don’t dare to take a name" Perhaps the Indians u met were not amongst the 20k who came to see Modi in MSG ...
@Mazo: Chill, man. Muslims in India are peace loving, barring a few exceptions. It is rather the racists like you who pose a real threat to India.
Take all muslims to Pakistan . We hate them go live with your brothers
@ Milind, i am living aborad as an overseas i have many indian friends here i swear most of them say that we don't want to live in india because of modi and specially now when they are converting muslims and about terrorists activities happening in pakistan we know who is behind them and funding them the problem is our politicians are corrupt & cowards they don't dare to take a name,
This had to happen someday according to Modi's ideology. It is ironic while Pakistan is trying to extricate itself from extremism, India is sinking deeper into it. The roles have changed. Let us see what is the future of extremist India.
@HZ:
" seems to me you were invited for the valima. Niether I nor you were present at the place God knows who loved who and what exactly happened. And even if I suppose the story is exactly how you described, setting a whole community on fire in return isnt violent?"
First of all, no one should resort to violence. I agree with you.
In the subcontinent, it happens because of poor law and order and weak justice system and high religious emotions.
Second, I only told you what the India media reported. You can google and read more.
@Mazo are you for real? Are you really an Indian? No one one I know thinks like that.
This is a very sad incident. Unfortunately, Muzzafarnagar has been a hotbed of communal tension since last year. Fortunately, the government has immediately deployed 400 staff to prevent more violence. The attackers have been booked and locked up in jail. How can the PM be responsible for every crime in the country?
To all those spewing venom on Hindus- please spare some sympathies for this 7 Muslims shot dead in Karachi today. What's your government doing about it?
@Blunt: How your statement and news are related? India is not a secular state.
Shining India
No wonder, Modi is in power
This happen in the indian state of bihar where is the secular govt of nitish kumar why crying about narendra modi
@Hmm: What has this got to do with Paris? Considering you are mentally challenged, as most hindus are, it still does not make any sense.
@Motiwala:
Muslims are hated AROUND the WORLD in every non-Islamic nation. They are scum, worse than scum in human form. Getting an excuse to retaliate is just an incident away. India has no reason to protect these aliens on our land;. Jinnah's incompetence is the reason these scum still infect the territory of India. If he was a more charismatic leader they would never have remained with India!
Just look at what they are doing all over the world - France, Syria, Morocco, Libya, Iraq etc.
@Pandey:
The people of India elected him to office - if you don't like it, YOU can "GO" . Modi's not going anywhere and 3 dead Mohammadens are not worth the ash they left behind.
@Blunt: what if I rease your sister you say it democracy
Indians like to jump on to conclusions. Where is the proof that muslims killed the girl. Does not anyone know how often girls get raped and silenced in India?
@ironMan! "you burn ppl on mere allegations....
It is like blackhole calling the kettle black!!
@Sohail Abbasi - In both the cases, the current episode and Gujrat riots, the violence was started by Muslims. Its true in your country as well. The only difference is that Modi and we Hindus firmly deal with these barbarians, whereas in your country you praised and preserved them and were rewarded by the Peshawar outrage...
@wb seems to me you were invited for the valima. Niether I nor you were present at the place God knows who loved who and what exactly happened. And even if I suppose the story is exactly how you described, setting a whole community on fire in return isnt violent? Look up the definition of hypocrite.
Last time it was Gujrat under Modi that saw such violence now whole India is likely to suffer all this under Modi.
The posters conveniently forgot that the Muslims killed the Hindu boy first. Of course, this is the pattern seen around the world.
Modi needs to go... period...
@ironMan!:
Yeah reached MARS without having toilet for most of the population
And here you go...Indians will not submit that easily and will never ever accept it and here few are still blaming it on Muslims.....This is how they are biased towards Muslims and Pakistan...Good going...
Tit for Tat...this is to remind you when Pakistani Muslims burned 2 husband/wife on accused blasphemy!
Common thing..You kill someone, they will kill you . Happens everywhere . Recently happened in Paris .
This is pure hindu hatred. Which has gone to new heights since Modi became Prime Minister. 3000 Muslims died in Gujrat, during riots, when Modi was Chief Minister there. Since then, Muslims, are specially targeted. Modi's govt. looks the other way when it comes to Muslims. As expected According to various Indian Newspapers there is an ongoing reign of of terror.against Muslims.. Which has now spread all over Bharat.
@Blunt: What has people's violence to do with the institution ? Our institution is still secular and always will be. Individuals crime does not dictate our institution like it does in Pakistan. People are killed in name of blasphemy and when they r acquitted a mob kills them outside police station. And still a Pakistani dares to taunt India. Bravo!! @ET, this is rebuttal to Blunt's taunt.
Amazing India....
you burn ppl on mere allegations. No Justice system in INDIA? thought they reached MARS? Invest in ppl's security and justice..pls
What else you can expect from a person who killed thousands of muslims in gujrat and now converting muslims & christians forcefully to hindu religion lol @ secular india
Heres a wam welcome to the non stop hate comments flying hither thither from both ( H and M ) directions.
@Blunt:
Yes we are.........any doubt, hope the same would have been in Pakistan or may be worse....?
What a rubbish reason....Sad news early in the morning.
As in most cases, the chain of violence was started by Muslims.
And what is WEBDESK? And why is it lying to people with: "Officials had quoted him as saying that the police have arrested eight Hindu villagers in response to setting the huts ablaze in the Muslim community."
The boy was not friendly with the girl, the boy and girl were in love. The boy was killed because he loved a Muslim girl.
This shows how violent, unreasonable and bigoted Muslims are even when they're in minority.
Welcome to the largest 'democrazy' of the world, a proclaimed 'secular' state.
