The Ifop poll found 42 percent believe Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) cartoons seen as offensive by many Muslims should not be published. Fifty percent said they backed "limitations on free speech online and on social networks."
However, 57 percent said opposition from Muslims should not prevent the cartoons being published, according to the poll, published in Le Journal du Dimanche.
The poll found overwhelming support -- 81 percent -- for stripping French nationality from dual nationals who have committed an act of terrorism on French soil.
Sixty eight percent favoured banning French citizens from returning to the country if "they are suspected of having gone to fight in countries or regions controlled by terrorist groups," such as Syria.
The same percentage backed bans on people suspected of wanting to join jihadist movements from leaving France.
However, 57 percent of respondents to the poll opposed French military intervention in countries including Libya, Syria and Yemen.
The poll was conducted last week in the wake of the slaughter at Charlie Hebdo's office in Paris, where gunmen killed 12 people, saying they were taking revenge for repeated publication by the magazine of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) caricatures.
On Saturday, five people were killed and churches were set on fire in Niger in the latest protests by Muslims against Charlie Hebdo's decision after the massacre to print another cartoon depicting the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius condemned the violence in Niger while President Francois Hollande called freedom of expression "non-negotiable".

@Bewildered: "two wrongs don't make a right." Protest, make them understand..but don't fall for same ill what they do.
@Bewildered: Who stopped you ? Ah the problem is that your media is not viewed by anyone but you. And their media is viewed globally.
Mr french president u said freedom of expresion is non negotiable...wht abt holocaust.....allowed to say some thing....these cartoons r drawing a line between euorpe and muslims ..watch it before its too late...
Shame on hardline believers
What percentage of these french were muslims ?
Why the Muslims don't make cartoons and videos of those who offend them and release them on the internet (even a website can be setup for this purpose), instead of killing those and going against the law. One can easily find their vulnerabilities and sensitivities and target them with humiliating and offending cartoons and videos same as they do. I am sure they wouldn't mind if we do the same. Start from those champions of the "Freedom of Expression" gathered in Paris, and test how truly they believe in it. Give them the taste of their own medicine and see how effective it is.
The headline is misleading. The fact is that the majority of french are supportive of publishing the cartoons.
