Beating your wife

Letter November 27, 2010
The way girls are brought up here, it is unlikely to instil in them the courage they need to stand up for rights.

KARACHI: This is with reference to a report by Atika Rehman in your newspaper titled “Blowing your gasket, beating your wife” (November 25). If women don’t speak out publicly about their brothers, husbands and fathers who indulge in domestic abuse, then this ill will continue to grow and spread throughout society.

Unfortunately, the way girls are brought up in Pakistan, it is unlikely to instil in them the courage they need to stand up for their own rights. Also linked to this is financial independence, which is crucial for women but which many of them do not have since their husbands or fathers do not allow them to work.
