Securing the pupils: Committee says security at most schools satisfactory

Punjab Minister for Labour and Manpower Raja Ashfaq Sarwar on Thursday reviewed security arrangements at various schools and Colleges in Rawalpindi.


Sarwar is also head of a committee constituted by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to oversee security measures for schools in Rawalpindi district, said a press release.

The minister on Thursday visited 10 private and government schools and checked whether the schools were complying with the instructions issued by the government after the Peshawar school attack.

The monitoring committee visited Saint Mary’s School, Rawalpindi Medical College, City School, Saddar, FG Secondary School Cantt, FG Girls School Kashmir Road, Beaconhouse School System, Civil Lines, Standard School Mughalabad, Army Public School and College Askari XIV, and Dar ul Arqam School in Gulraiz Colony.

The provincial government has asked all institutes to ensure deployment of trained security guards equipped with metal detectors, installation of barbed wires on the boundary walls, verification of the staff and surveillance of the surroundings.

The minister found some of the institutes not fully implementing the procedure and asked them to meet the guidelines within a timeframe. Overall, the committee said that security measures at most of the institutes were satisfactory.

The committee has categorised the schools according to sensitivity and security concerns. Director Colleges Humayun Iqbal, Executive District Officer (EDO) Education Qazi Zahoor ul Haq, Assistant Commissioner (Saddar) Tasneem Ali Khan and local PML-N leaders accompanied the provincial minister on his visits to schools on Thursday.
