Two death row prisoners hanged in Karachi, Lahore

Awan killed retired deputy superintendent, his son in 2001, Zahid killed a police constable

LAHORE/ KARACHI: Two more death row prisoners were hanged this morning in Karachi and Lahore as the government continues to execute terror convicts since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a six-year moratorium on hangings, Express News reported Thursday. 

Saeed Awan was hanged in Karachi's Central Jail while Arif Zahid was hanged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Awan, in April 2001, had killed retired deputy superintendent Sabir Hussain Shah and his son, Abid Hussain in Malir and Zahid had killed a police constable in Multan.

The convicts were given permission to see their relatives before they were hanged, however, at the time of the hanging, security was kept very tight and access to unauthorised persons was restricted.

Since the ban on capital punishment was lifted on December 17, 2014, 19 condemned prisoners have been hanged across the country.
