Elections: PTI challenges Local Govt Act

LAHORE:

Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought assistance from the attorney general and the advocate general of the Punjab on a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf challenging Sections 22 and 24 of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2013.

These sections authorise the provincial government to appoint presiding officers to hold local government polls. PTI Punjab president Ejaz Chaudhry filed the application.

His counsel said the Sections took away powers of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as only the ECP had the authority to hold LG polls.

He asked the court to strike down Sections 22 and 24 of the Punjab Local Government Act. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah allowed another petitioner, Advocate Shabbir Ismail, to become a party to the case. The hearing will resume on February 11.
