SWABI:

In the wake of the government’s crackdown on unregistered Afghan refugees, a group of 12 students along with a teacher left for Afghanistan from a madrassah in Swabi on Tuesday.

Maulana Hamdullah Jan, a leading religious figure in Dagai, Swabi, saw the Afghan students and a teacher off from the Darul Uloom Mazharul Uloom seminary.

According to locals, this was the second group of Afghan nationals leaving Swabi. Hundreds of Afghan students left a seminary in Panjpir last week.

Bidding farewell to the students, Maulana Hamdullah Jan said in light of the government’s decision to deport Afghans living in the country without valid Proof of Registration cards, they were left with no option but to see the students off themselves.

Maulana Jan added he hoped the departing students would continue their education in their home country.

The cleric further said local religious leaders have reservations over the 21st Amendment as it targets seminaries. “We have asked the government to repeal the amendment or we will review our cooperation with it,”
said Jan.

Embezzlement

Swabi’s anti-corruption department claims to have recovered Rs2.5 million embezzled during the construction of a link road. According to an official of the anti-corruption department, inspector Amir Hussain initiated a probe into alleged embezzlement of funds allocated for constructing a link road between Shewa town and Khalil village.

The enquiry found the contractor and an official of the Communication and Works department guilty of misappropriating around Rs2.5 million.

Both accused were then told to return that money to the national exchequer, said the anti-corruption department official.
