LARKANA:

Madeji police have freed 10 bonded labourers from the captivity of an influential landlord, Zamir Shah, in Shikarpur district's riverine area on the directions of a district and sessions judge.

The freed labourers include Mangal, Mohan, Bangro, Mollu, Kellu, Cheetal and five-year-old Kanki from the Menghwar community, said SHO Madeji police station Akhtar Abro.

A woman named Sharmeti had filed an application in the sessions court on January 8 that Shah had brought these people from Mithi one year ago. He had promised to pay them for their labour and even offered a share in the produce. But later he refused to pay them, she claimed, adding that he did not allow them to leave.

On court orders, the police raided the area and found the 10 people in captivity. The landlord managed, however, to flee, said SHO Abro.
