IDPs rejoice after news of repatriation

Tribesmen to begin returning home next month.

BANNU: A wave of joy has spread among internally displaced persons (IDP) from North Waziristan after the announcement of their repatriation and scores of tribesmen came out on the streets in celebration on Monday.

The displaced people who have been living in Bannu since Operation Zarb-e-Azb began in June last year assembled at various markets and roads of the city in jubilation and celebrated by beating drums and performing the Attan dance. They also distributed sweets.

The announcement to repatriate North Waziristan IDPs as early as next month was made on Sunday evening by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif while chairing a high-level meeting in Peshawar.

Along with the tribesmen, a number of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Ayesha Iqbal, the president of the Lahore women’s wing, Gul Rukh Tariq, Rubina Yaqoob, PTI Bannu President Shab Niaz Khan and General Secretary Taimoor Shah, have also welcomed the decision.

While addressing the IDPs on their visit to Bannu, the leaders thanked the people of Bannu for hosting the displaced population.

They also appreciated the tribesmen for leaving behind their homes for the restoration of peace.

Members of the PTI women’s wing and office-bearers from Lahore also distributed blankets and quilts among the IDPs in Mandan.
