Food security: Step to promote halal products

Faculty established to conduct research, raise awareness.

FAISALABAD: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) has set up the “Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences”, in order to address the issue of malnutrition in the country along with promoting value-added products, halal food science and train manpower for the emerging food industry.   

This was stated by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan while chairing a meeting of the Graduate Studies Research Board arranged at the National Institute of Food Sciences and Technology (NIFSAT). Prof Dr Masood Sadiq Butt has assumed the charge as the Dean of Faculty.



The vice chancellor said the faculty was the need of the hour, keeping in view the issues of malnutrition and the demand of food industry.  He said quality education, gender mainstreaming and demand-driven research will pave the way for development and assist in coping with unemployment and poverty.

He said that no nation can progress without ensuring quality education. He urged the staff to take all tangible steps in order to maintain quality education and hone the skills of students. He said that current enrolment of the varsity was standing at 19,000, which was only 7,000 students a few years ago. He said that active participation of women, comprising 52% of the population was imperative to compete with the rest of the world. He said that the university has mapped out a plan to launch a degree on gender development to produce trained manpower. He said that the research portfolio of the UAF has touched Rs6 billion which speaks the trust of industry and international agencies on the UAF quality research work.
