Musicians like Jimmy Khan & The Big Ears, Asrar, Naseer & Shahab and Usman Riaz were a breeze of fresh air

KARACHI: In terms of music, this year can be considered one of many hits and misses. Strings had an average excursion as producers of the popular music television show Coke Studio and were faced with the herculean mission of filling the shoes of Rohail Hyatt, whereas Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s album, Back2love received a very uncharacteristic mixed response. Musicians like Jimmy Khan & The Big Ears, Asrar, Naseer & Shahab and Usman Riaz were surely a breeze of fresh air in the music industry.

As per the reader’s choice, Ghoongat by the Meekal Hasan Band emerged as the best song of the year. The reader’s and The Express Tribune’s choice for the best in music were almost the same. The anthem of this year’s Coke StudioSab Akho Ali Ali was being touted as the most likely song to rake in the maximum number of votes but unpredictably, it took the number four spot. Despite only a few music singles being released every year, this trend signifies there is serious depth to Pakistani music.

Songs like Ghalti Mein Shta by the duo of Naseer & Shahab and Meena by The Sketches can be termed as the dark horses of the polls. Despite their rather diverse and unique styles, both the bands managed to accumulate a decent number of votes.
