QUETTA: Burdened by unpaid bills running into billions of rupees, the Quetta Electric Supply Company (Qesco) has decided to increase the hours of power outages in Balochistan to cut losses.

Consumers owe the power utility around Rs132 billion, of which Rs115 billion is outstanding against electricity users in the agriculture sector, the distribution company supplying electricity to most parts of Balochistan said in a statement.

“Qesco decided to increase the hours of load-shedding following the directives of the water and power ministry,” its spokesperson said.

The provincial government departments are in default of around Rs8 billion, federal government Rs745 million and the domestic, commercial and industrial consumers owe Qesco Rs8 billion.

Following the directives of water and power ministry, Qesco chief executive Engr Balighuz Zaman asked the provincial departments to pay the arrears. “There is no response to the legal notices which have been sent to all defaulters for payment of dues…there is no word from the defaulter departments,” said the statement, citing Zaman. The Qesco chief said the company purchases electricity and then sells it to its consumers. It cannot supply electricity without any payment.

He said Qesco has launched power disconnection campaign against defaulters without any discrimination and political pressure.
