SHERGARH:

Two weeks after the December 16 massacre in Peshawar, religious parties have started taking a stand against “damaging the image of religious institutions."

After Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl announced its intent to stand by seminaries on Sunday, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Sirajul Haq said on Monday the party would not allow the disgracing of madrassas “in the name of fighting terror”.

Haq was speaking at a public meeting in Jewar, Mardan along with provincial ameer Muhammad Ibrahim, district chief Dr Attaur Rehman and others, where a number of people jumped ship from other parties and announced their move to JI.

Terrorists are enemies of the country, said Haq. “We denounce and grieve the inhumane attack on the school in Peshawar, but certain elements are using the attack as a justification to damage the image of religious institutions and insult scholars.”

Haq added, “Former dictator Pervez Musharraf is responsible for the export and import of terrorism in the country.” The JI chief blamed Musharraf for encouraging extremists to establish dens in the country.

Mr.Siraajul haq, we welcome the denouncing of the terrorists. Now please also state that our soldiers who die fighting these terrorists are shaheed, and those terrorists are jahannumi. As for Musharraf, if we combine all of JI and its predesessors, it will not amount to 1% of the leadership that Musharraf provided. What have you done to combat terrorism?
