The drought in Thar (II)

Letter December 29, 2014
The helpless people of Thar have been abandoned while we do petty point-scoring

KARACHI: An extreme level of ignorance and negligence by state organisations was displayed in the case of the drought in Tharparkar. In the age of science and technology, where man is exploring water and life on other planets, humans are still dying of hunger and thirst. It is indeed a pitiable situation. The role of the media, however, is commendable as it has brought the disastrous situation of Thar to the attention of the stakeholders. Despite the broadcasting of stories about deaths and drought, the government has not shown any willingness in taking serious action. Instead, activists, NGOs, philanthropists, volunteers and individuals have come forward to rescue the victims of the disastrous drought in the land of Thar.

The government is clearly not taking serious notice of the situation. The helpless people of Thar have been abandoned while we do petty point-scoring. The government should have come forward as a stronger source of social service. The drought in Tharparkar is a chronic issue that has to be solved. Immediate remedial action may save us from any further loss of precious lives.
