When the election results started pouring in, my point was proven. For the first time ever in their history, the US citizens had chosen a man of Mr Obama’s origins. And while at the time of this prediction my faith was still shaky, remember President George Bush’s years in power, here was a definite proof that even if the most powerful democracy in the world occasionally strayed from the path, it knew how to stage a comeback. It merits a mention here that the weariness with the Bush Administration was due to the neocon influence. The US invasion of Iraq along with the so-called coalition of the willing brought to the fore a repulsive circus which made many of us believe that the neocons were not serious in fighting terrorism. But all that had now changed. With a Democratic Party win, it was clear that the neocons will no longer be in power. Mr Obama then became a metaphor for me. The metaphor of American diversity and democracy.
Compared with the US, Indian democratic credentials are not as much doubted in Pakistan as we often lead you to believe. That the Indian Army has not once derailed democracy in the country is a huge compliment to both. Within democratic circles, however, the musical chairs between the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has gone on for bit now. Before the Delhi state elections, it was my hunch that given the phenomenal rise of Mr Modi and the shaky performance of the Inc-led government, the BJP would win. I took my questions to an Indian friend at the mission here. He was of the opinion that a third force by the name of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was emerging and with it there was hope that the Left or the Third Front would be revived. When the results of the Delhi state assembly election arrived, the AAP managed to form a government there. I have seen miracles of democracy in the past. So was it possible that the Third Front would win the national elections? Despite a moving inaugural speech of Mr Kejriwal, the AAP chief, as Delhi’s chief minister, things started going downhill for him. The party quit the government leaving voters in the lurch. So Mr Modi again?
Mr Modi holds a special place in my memory. When the 2002 Gujarat riots broke out, I was asked to write a series of articles on the situation. It gave me a lot of time to study the carnage. At the time everything smelled of conspiracy, every failure pointed to Mr Modi, the then chief minister of the state. Deny it all you want but regardless of what happened in the state that year, it is a fact that the incident earned him a dark reputation and strengthened his position in the Sangh Parivar of which the BJP is a member. So on the day of the Indian national elections, I waited with bated breath as the results started coming in. In the end, the Mr Modi-led coalition had swept the election. I was in disbelief. This was the man, violence under whose rule had led a heartbroken Khushwant Singh to write a booklet titled The End of India. India’s new prime minister was now become a metaphor for what India was capable of — travelling back in time.
I know it is not my place to question Indian secularism and democracy. But as a citizen of a country which has suffered from a lack of both, I am saddened by the recent developments.

I think this author has a man-crush on Modi.
What is so striking about Pakistanis is that they are most obsessed, concerned or even depressed about the plight of Muslims all over the world whether it is India, Myanmar, China, France, USA etc. However fact of the matter is that lot of Muslims in the said countries is far better than Pakistan where Muslims are not only killing Muslims but minorities as well which is quite acceptable to them. As regards Modi is concerned, most of the Pakistani journalists have been focusing on 2002 riots calling Modi as butcher of Muslims but conveniently forget to analyse that he has already erased his past by not allowing a single communal riot to take place till date and made Gujarat the most progressive state of India which helped the lot of people including Muslims. Therefore, people of India voted for Modi not for his past tense but for their future perfect and if it happens, will depress Mr Pitafi even more.
@Secular Resident Indian Hindu: Do you remember Jayanti Tax in EPA? How many project been clear? Just read this: http://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/no-proof-required-why-no-applause-for-modis-reforms/ tunnel vision
The author perhaps is not aware, or perhaps deliberately avoids to mention that Modi has been given a clean chit by the supreme court of India in his involvement in Gujarat riots. Yes, whether he acted swiftly enough, or he could have done more, the jury is still out for that. But whenever a riot or an act of terrorism happens or anything unfortunate happens, the obvious thing is that enough wasnt done, else would not have happened. But to paint a picture saying he instigated the riots, is going too far, coz the India supreme court doesn't think so. Mr. author, you would do a lot for your own credibility in your own eyes, if you can give up on your partisanship against Modi. Think about it.
Writers on this side tend to look at Modi through the 12 year old lens of the Gujarat affair......it done and dusted with.......and the scene has changed. It would be much more interesting to speculate on the present and how it would affect the future.
@Dipak: What an ignorant and ahistorical comment! Without the able - yes even visionary - leadership provided by the committed secularist Jawaharlal Nehru, and the Congress Party after Independence, India would not be a secular democracy today. It would have turned into an RSS/Jansangh communal nightmare under Sardar Patel. Manmohan Singh got India off the "Hindu Growth rate" in 1992 and unleashed the economic potential of India that BJP under Vajpayee rode for a few years before overplaying its moronic "India Shining" theme led to their loss. Modi is not yet a hero until he improves the economic lot for ALL Indians, and not just his friends in business and the RSS/Hindutva circles. His win has given only hope. But results only will matter. If his programs succeed, he will get his due! But hero designation is premature, Sir. And, regarding Sonia Gandhi (a naturalized Indian citizen), where's your proof? By the way, the way she is treated in some circles (or which you must be a part) in the BJP/RSS as an "alien", remember all the Indians who went abroad and are naturalized citizens of the U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, France, and Australia. If she will remain in your eyes an alien, then all those Indians will also remain aliens forever. In demonizing her, you are really demonizing all Indian Christians and other non-Hindus aren't you by extension, as well as the vast majority of Hindus who prefer secular to sectarian? Ultimately, you are demonizing and undermining a secular India? You cannot go back home again!
@someone: And his analysis of the 2008 American elections is also simplistic and wrong.
@Jor El: read writer s comments /narration regarding victory of black Obama in USA whereas in India a religious fundamentalist became PM
Dipak@Sara: Ignorant!!!
@Singh: Just making sweeping statement agaisnt critics of "development" campaign does not mean anything. Please list out any major policies done by this BJP government which is different from previous Congress lead government in last 6 MONTHS. Let PM of MODI choose between Secularism V/s Development, Tolerance V/s Communal HIndutva .. Peace V/s Hindutva ideology. Just chanting and repeating LIES about so-called DEVELOPMENT ...will India DEVELOP.
@raider: Before Pakistanis conducted the mayhem in Mumbai in November 2008, we were not bothered about Pakistan. After the Mumbai attack, we became very curious to know about the country which could hurt us like that and hence this interest. ET is free to not publish/ bar our comments.
@Motiwala: I am sorry to disappoint you- I am not a Hindu.
This is the same Modi who was denied entry by USA for his role in Gujrat riots! I don't see any difference between governments run by Obama, Modi or Taliban...
If Enemy is feeling sad then Modi is good new for Indians. Elephant will now walk at Tiger 's r pace while dogs will try best for creating distractions assuming they have importance in ral scheme of things.
Mr. Pilafi, Khushwant Singh is smiling in the heaven that he was wrong, he blesses Modi and thinks finally an ASHOK is born in India.
Mr. Pitafi: I, too, was saddened. But there was no credible political alternative: Rahul was a disaster and could not cope.
Dipak@javed Iqbal: it should read: what a difference between the world's largest democracy and andictorship?
Congress because of its inability to counter the marketing gimmick of right wing brigade lead to this situation. Also, AAP, with its clean image was unable to counter the so-called "development" plank of right wing elements, even though based more on hype than substance, gave impetus to this situation. Looking back back at election rallies and narrative of right wing elements, the Government has done nothing so far in last 6 months , which can indicate anything connected to "development" agenda. They have just re-cycled the old ideas into new bottle. Present government is more interested in replacing German Language by Sanskrit, Changing School syllabus for government school from tolerant to Hindutva lead ideology..conversion of Tribals , Justifying killing of Mahatma Gandhi , Banning movies which talks about demolition of Babri Masjid...!! While all these disturbing things going, Prime Minister of India is like Nero..turning DUMB and BLIND ..he is more interested in monologues through TWITTER, RADIO TALKS..which he calls as GOOD GOVERNANCE!!! No investor will be willing to invest in such super charged by HUNDUTVA COMMUNAL atmosphere .. MAKE IN INDIA will remain just a slogan...with RSS and HINDU MAHA SABHA driving the government agenda..ot PM of INDIA> PM India will hve to show some SPINE to stand upto RIGHT WING COMMUNAL elements and banish them, if he wants INDIA to DEVELOP. TOLERANCE V.s HINDUTVA ..PEACE V/s INTOLERANCE..LOVE V/s VENOM...SECULARISM V/s DEVLOPMENT ..PM of India will have to choose immediately.
Indian trolls are how much active in this page
Concern trolling much?
@javed Iqbal: Facts like what ???
Thank god for Mr. Modi. He has brought in refreshing change in India and its relationships with the wider world. He is going to change the entire Indian sub-continent for better. He was unnecessarily blamed for the Gujarat riots, when he tried everything possible to stem the killings. And the highest court of India has completely exonerated him of the Gujarat riots.
@JSM: Only hindus allowed to comment. Pro Bharat and hindu moderators at ET censure others. This is so pathetic.
Modi is good news for India and definitely bad news for Pakistan. KIndly study Indian reaction to LOC firing under his leadership. He will make Pakistan pay a very heavy price for whatever it does to hurt India. Remember 1998- India knew that Pakistan will follow and it will attract sanctions. India got stronger under sanctions. You can see what has happened to Pakistan. Yesterday, Indian Foreign exchange reserves stood at USD320 billion while Pakistan was only USD15 Billion: less than 5 % of Indian reserves. In last 6 months, Indian reserves have gone up bu USD 50 Billion. Where is the comparison?
Come on ET. Bring something new for your Indian readers. This guys is boring. Even those Naqvi/Noorani chaps on Dawn are more entertaining than this chap. You need to hire someone else.
Farukh Khan Pitafi - One scenario you have not consider, Bohras, Khojas, Memons, Parsis , some muhajirs of sind agree to support modi for trade facilitation between sind and gujarat. what is your stand.?
Yes. We did not vote for Mr Modi for improving Indian economy or seeing his performance in Gujrat. We only voted for him to start a nuclear war with pakistan and kill all muslims in pakistan. Happy????
Is it necessary to write something even when there is nothing substantial to write about ?
Brother, you will be even more saddened when you see where he takes India in the five years of his term, ten years if voters feel he needs to take his good work forward. India represents the last great investment opportunity for global investors. The capability of Indians in any field was never in any doubt, they were just waiting for a suitable enabling environment that did not stifle their creativity and entrepreneurial ability. One has to simply look around to see how the Indian diaspora has done, in countries that encourage talent.
India was expected to become the third largest Economy by 2050, however it will be achieved before 2025. the India of today is a very confident country, its large population ensuring it has unmatched talent in every field in numbers. With or without Modi India would have achieved all its goals, however having an enabler and motivator at the top can accelerate the process. Just consider that Indian E Commerce start ups alone have raised over $ 10 Billion form Venture Capitalist in just this year. The number of new start ups is simply jumping every day. Expat Indians now want to come back home bringing both their funds and their expertise. It is an exciting time to grow up and do business in India today. Not a single country wants to miss out on the opportunities India has to offer, falling over one another to bag the most lucrative projects. Pakistan will live to rue the lost opportunities, married as it is to ideology, welfare of its citizens being of lowest priority.
Yes Modi,Obama,Israel,India,Zambia,Papua new guinea has no work at all...All they are concerned with is muslims and pakistan....they always think of muslim and pakistan and how to demonise the world superpower pakistan....Infact all the countrymen of these countries wheather be it consultant,IT people,Investment banker all are given work to destabilize pakistan..Infact the plumbers are told to find ways in which no water reaches pakistan..etc..etc..sir we must carry this message to the world for aid......
I literally read the article in 20 seconds. Kudos to the author for remembering Bradley Effect. It would have been better if he had explained the Bradley Effect. As long as Mr Narendra Modi is in power, I will be exposed to useless articles on ET.
What a crap! I thought proper comparison with stratergic policies of these 2 personalities will be part of this article. But It was a article of very personal opinion & simply not worth of posting on newspaper.
Sorry, We Indians do not agree with your opinion. Even if we go by your assumption, (which Indian courts and Indians do not agree with), that Modiji was somehow somewhere involved in the Gujarat massacre, the moment the govt does not deliver on economic front over a reasonable period of time, they will be booted out. Understand one thing, Modiji was not elected for his alleged involvement in Gujarat mayhem, but he was elected for what he has done in Gujarat economically, ie 24X7 power supply, enormous investments, lesser corruption etc etc. Tell me onething, everybody and his uncle knows the involvement of "Con"gress in the sikh mayhem, Was it chucked out for ever or for that matter has the court convicted the guilty. And above all, the opinions coming from a Pakistani is the height of it.
Saddened for what, Mr. Farrukh?
It would help you if you grow out of your biased view point.
If author has followed Gujarat riots ,he must have known about Godhra massacre of hindu pilgrims -the cause behind the riot.At the time novice Modi was only 3 months in power and has no administrative experience.
Modi is the best thing ever happened to India. For the first time in the 67 years history of India a hero is born. The typical corrupt Congress Party deceitfully supported Muslims without doing anything. The corrupt Italian Mafia Lady stole billions from the poor people of India. 90 paise of every Rupee went for corruption. Now that Modi is turning things over all corrupt politicians have become Anti-Modi with nobody listening. Jay Ho Modi. Even Obama thinks Modi is the best thing happened to India.
Ok. Be saddened. Did you not notice the Supreme Court verdict in the 2002 riot case and what it has to say about Modi. Did you not notice that the electorate voted for a change towards progression. You wrote the series of articles as a Pakistani muslim with a biased mindset, but do you know that the electorate that voted in Modi has a fair hare of Muslim vote. Do you know that the Muslims in Gujarat also wanted Modi to be the CM of Gujarat and hence he won the mandate 3 times. Did your research bring out these insignificant facts. So continue to be saddened.
Modi is here to stay for at least 2 terms. So try to adjust with realities. Obama is among the least popular presidents in US history. His second term is almost a miracle. Next term, Reps are coming back.....any bets? The way you say Modi strengthened his position in sangh pariwar, you are strengthening yours by constant Modi bashing!
Man....is it not a height of obsession????This is a second column by the same "expert" about India and Modi in a week's time. I think Pakistani "experts" start chanting "Modi" or "India" right from the dawn till the dusk. Even Indian newspaper do not spend that much time on Modi. Mr. Pitafi, why Mr. NS or Mr. IK are not fortunate enough to be in your articles? Or do you think that a constructive criticism of them will land you in hot soup?
Why should we not question the democracy and secular credentials of Hindustan/India.
Modi won the election partly by demonising Pakistan. He came to power to sort Pakistan out in the way he sorted gujarati Muslims out. So we have been directly affected by the choice the Indians have made.
Given your last article titled "Our Indian headache" where you revealed your visceral hatred for Modi, I am glad you wrote this article to explain yourself.
Firstly Khushwant Singh is hardly an objective observer when it comes to Indian politics given the fact that hordes of Congress workers went to his house looking for him during the 1984 Sikh riots which he escaped by the skin of his teeth by hiding in his bathroom, yet he was always an avowed Congress loyalist who professed his admiration of Indira Gandhi numerous times despite the fact that it was Operation Blue Star and her assassination that resulted in the former sequence of events.
Secondly it would be wrong to state that the 2002 Gujarat riots turned Modi into a darling of the right brigade. On the contrary, Modi hunkered down on his development agenda and cut VHP down to size that they mostly stayed away from Gujarat so much so that there were no murmurs when he destroyed scores of illegal roadside temples in Gujarat to make way for wider roads.
If the 2002 riots have a special place in your memory, then you should also reflect on the train incident that caused it in the first place and you should also understand the perfidy that brought about the demolition of a mosque.
We, Indians, are resolutely looking forward to our rightful place in the world. More than anyone else, Modi knows what we voted him in for.
Another obligatory biweekly article on a Modi related topic.
