Jamiat Ulamae Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) senator Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani on Tuesday rejected the chairmanship of the Council of Islamic Ideology.

According to Express 24/7 reporter Muhammad Kazim, the JUI-F has rejected the chairmanship because the notification issued by the government states that Sherani has been appointed chairman ‘till further orders.’ The party said that under Article 228 of the constitution, the chairman of the CII is appointed for a period of three years, and the notification does not state this.

Senior leader of JUI-F, Maualana Wasay said his party had taken up the matter with the president and the prime minister but no action had been taken. He said the party would accept the chairmanship if the appointment is made as per the constitution.

Sherani had been appointed chairman after a long interval following the retirement of Dr Khalid Masood in May this year.

In a recent report published in The Express Tribune, the appointment drew criticism from various quarters, with some activists saying that the appointment of a politician as the head of the institution will push Pakistan back to the Islamisation era it experienced under then president Ziaul Haq.

Set up in 1962, the body had just an advisory role – it was to tell the legislature, when asked, about whether or not a law was repugnant to Islam. While it could also make recommendations to the Parliament about how to help Muslims live their lives in accordance with Islamic principles or even suggest Islamic injunctions, which could be translated into laws, significantly, the council did not have any teeth. The Parliament had the absolute authority to completely ignore the advice, if it so willed.

Its not politics, its just blackmailing and exploitation of the situation by an opportunist who is part of every government but poses to be in opposition.
Politics means something to serve people not to serve own interests.
Shame on such people who call themselves politicians and Allamas. They dont deserve even to be called humans. selling religion and emotions for personal gains.Recommend

It is a shameful instance of how most of our maulanas, muftis and maulvis use the doubl;e-edged sword of religio-political polity. And Fazalur Rahman sahib deserves a Nobel prize in the art of exploiting his religious tag.
Secondly CII is being exploited as a political bargaining chip by the ruling regime to accommodate favourutes. In the 1990s a hard core politician was accommodated as chairman CII.by the government.
Thirdly CII was established for 20 years in the Constitution. Its life was extended. It has since done its job of identifying anti Islam laws to be removed. It should be wound up. It is much more pressing now when rulers are begging from foreigners for every penny to run the mostly corrupt government. Basjir A. Malik Lahore.

JUI-F’s stance of “the party said that under Article 228 of the constitution, the chairman of the CII is appointed for a period of three years, and the notification does not state this.”

As Mr. Sherani has already been a member since June 2009 as per article 228(4)

[(4). The President shall appoint one of the members of the Islamic Council to be the
    Chairman thereof.

So if he is appointed chairman of the council it wont be a new appointment it would be a continuation of his tenure, meaning he would be chairman for 2 years ,not 3 .

    I hope someone notices this.Recommend
