Ayaz Sadiq challenges tribunal verdict in LHC

Sadiq’s counsel had earlier stated that the tribunal had violated a Supreme Court judgement

LAHORE: Speaker National Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) MNA Sardar Ayaz Sadiq filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against an election tribunal's verdict in favour of vote recount in NA-122.

The petition was accepted for hearing.

Addressing a press conference on December 14, Sadiq’s counsel had said that they would file a writ petition challenging the verdict of the tribunal, as well as a contempt petition which will be filed against the tribunal judge who violated the judgement of the Supreme Court.

He had stated that the Supreme Court's (SC) judgement was clear that the tribunal will decide first the maintainability of the petition which will be filed in election commission, however in this case the maintainability of the petition was not decided before the verdict was handed, which is sheer violation of the SC judgement.

The tribunal’s judgement came after around a year-and-a-half of the proceedings. The case, which was taken up on the PTI chairman’s plea, was inordinately delayed after PML-N MNA Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, who won the NA-122 seat, obtained a stay order from the LHC.

The LHC dismissed Sadiq’s plea on November 20, allowing the tribunal to finally proceed with the case.
