Many Republicans as well as Democrats see advantages in regularising illegal immigrants. In fact, rather than sending them back to where they came from they would like all undocumented immigrants to submit to background checks, learn English and start paying taxes. On this issue, President Obama has demonstrated his compassion by increasing deportation relief for an estimated 4.4 million undocumented immigrants. Recently, in his address in Nashville, Tennessee, President Obama sought to reassure Hispanics that signing up for deportation relief under his new immigration policy was safe and would not put them in jeopardy if his White House successor tried to overturn the action. He also paid tribute to people of Latin American origin who have made many contributions to the American way of life.
The migration of Pakistanis in fairly large numbers to the New World occurred after the 1965 amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act. Since 1998, more than 150,000 Pakistanis have gained lawful permanent residence in the United States. Most of them settled in New York, Houston, Chicago, Washington, DC and Los Angeles. The majority of them had a bachelor’s degree and were more likely to enter the labour force than immigrants from other countries. About a third of Pakistani immigrants were employed in either management or business or sciences and engineering occupations. The fact that they knew English was a great help. The enthusiasm has waned somewhat, especially after the fallout from 9/11 when Homeland Security started to single out Pakistani passport holders and reports trickled in of undue harassment of Muslim travellers on suspicion they might be terrorists. Apparently, nobody is above the law, not even the Indian ambassador to the United States, Meera Shankar, who was patted down at Jackson Airport after being pulled out of the line of passengers. Homeland Security had discovered a new terrorist threat — the sari. Wait till they discover the gharara.

@Sexton Blake: Yes, standard of living has dropped for many after the 2008 economic crisis. Some European countries - e.g. Greece - are still suffering from economic woes. But has the quality of life suffered also? I admit that the standard and quality for many who live on the margins in the U.S. appears to be worse today than it was 40 years ago. But many Western nations - including Canada - are still doing pretty good and are still attractive. US still attracts the largest number of immigrants every year. Are you sure about the 3,000 figure - seems awfully low. Or is it just for Pakistanis? The new kid on the block - China - seems very impressive if you are counting growth rates and number of billionaires and millionaires. But for many in China - peasants and people migrating to cities from rural hinterlands, life is still miserable, cramped and unfree. Without political freedoms, economic freedom alone does not provide for a good quality of life The notion of an ever increasing standard of living for all (rather than an increasing concentration of a "greedy" few) and quality of life, is subject to decreasing returns as we exhaust and pollute the planet's life support systems (water, air, land).
The author is out of date when he regards Mr Obama a compassionate person? The guy is an imposter and was elected on hope of peace and he gave the Americans continued war in the middle east and Afghanistan. He pursued universal health affecting mostly blacks, the clinton project and neglected the lack of education in the black community, ignored reforms in police force and curb torture in CIA system, but increased extra judicial killings across in muslim countries, refused to let the innocents free and close down the guatanimo prison and stop torture in randition hideouts. Now he has the soup which is being splashed across the streets of America. America is no longer the land of opportunity but a sinking Ship.

Anwer Mooraj is always a good read, but having been a migrant some 63 years ago I have a slightly different slant on migration. At that time the Western world, with America at the top, was a type of dream world where it was extremely difficult not to do well, and I did. Nowadays, if people look at the current Western world objectively, the situation has reversed and taken a huge nose dive economically, Of course, compared to Pakistan the US looks good, but it has large employment problems, and the standard-of-living is continually dropping. The 150,000 Pakistanis migrants to America may be doing well, but they are the cream of the crop, and if we look at the statistics only 3,000 were accepted into America annually, and this works out at 0.0016% of the population. I do not think the average Pakistani has much chance of migrating to America if in fact he/she wishes to. At the end of the day, all the average person requires is reasonable accommodation, bathroom facilities, a reliable water supply, education facilities tor their children, transport, and a few little luxuries. How hard can it be for a Government to satisfy these requirements? Unfortunately, the Sub-Continent governments appear unable to do so for the majority.
Obama is great. He's only killed a few thousand innocent men, women and children using drones in Pakistan. He's only precided over torture by shadowy intelligence agencies for a few years. He's only attacked Libya, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan and Syria and killed God knows how many people in the process. We should give him another Nobel peace prize for all the good work he's done.
Interesting read .....and I liked that you stayed away from drawing conclusions and pontificating on the subject. America will for some time to come remain the country of choice for immigrants because of its vast size with a population of only some 320 million and its huge economy that can accommodate many along with other positive features.
Funny article. Of course Shazad (Time Square bomber) was an Indian wearing a sari.
