Injury concerns: Gul doubtful for remaining three ODIs

His appearance in the second T20 against the Kiwis may have proved too much for his fragile fitness

KARACHI:

Pakistan cricket’s injury woes continue after senior bowler Umar Gul became the latest cause of concern with an ankle injury, thus clouding his participation in the rest of the three one-dayers against New Zealand.

Gul had been out of the side for more than six months after the World Twenty20 this year due to a recurring knee injury. However, he forced his way back into the national squad after putting up strong performances in the domestic circuit for his department HBL.

His appearance in the second T20 against the Kiwis, in which he claimed two wickets off fours overs and a dismal performance in the first ODI, may have proved too much for his fragile fitness.

“Gul is now doubtful for rest of the remaining one-dayers because of an injury to his left ankle,” a team management official told The Express Tribune.

“There is bruising on his left ankle and we hope it isn’t a tendon tear because we’re already short of firepower as far as pacers are concerned. We already have Wahab Riaz and Muhammad Irfan who are making a comeback following injuries, while Junaid Khan is still out.”

It has been learnt that all-rounder Anwar Ali could be called in to cover for Gul in the last three matches.
