PESHAWAR: Over two dozen Shias have been killed in various incidents of target killings in Peshawar this year, estimates the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chapter of Tehreek Nifaz Fiqh-e-Jafariya (TNFJ).

Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club on Wednesday, TNFJ K-P vice president Allama Malik Ijlal Haider Al-Haideri said a judicial commission should be set up to investigate incidents of target killings in K-P. “Irrespective of any religious or sectarian leanings, a terrorist is a terrorist and should be dealt with an iron fist,” he added.

According to the TNFJ leader, the general public is firmly in the crosshairs of militants who have wreaked havoc throughout the province. Al-Haideri said such incidents of target killings in the provincial capital were challenging the writ of the provincial government and making it look weak in the face of pressure.

“This year, over two dozen Shias have been killed in Peshawar,” he said. “Moreover, a large number of Sikhs, Hindus and Christians also come under attack.”

Al-Haideri demanded compensation for all losses incurred by victims of target killings in the province. “Compensation should be granted without any form of discrimination,” he added.

According to Al-Haideri, target killers are operating their dens from the outskirts of Peshawar. Consequently, fear and insecurity looms large beyond the limits of Circular Road.

He urged the government to conduct an operation in Peshawar to crackdown against these dens and restore peace to the region. “Action should also be taken in Kohat, DI Khan, Tank and other areas to rid the areas of target killers,” he added.

Haideri also pressed for an enquiry into the administrative conduct of law enforcement agencies.

“The recurrence of targeted attacks raises questions about the efficiency of law-enforcement agencies,” said the TNFJ leader.
