BUNER: Two policemen were killed by unknown militants in the Dokada area of Buner district after they were abducted on their way to perform security duties in connection with the polio vaccination drive in the district.

District Police Officer Asif Iqbal Mohmand, while confirming the reports, told The Express Tribune that bodies of both policemen were found Monday morning. He said both officers were asked to perform security duty with polio vaccinators and volunteers in different towns and villages of Buner district.

“They had left the Elum mountainous region Sunday evening but disappeared on their way to Daggar, later their bodies were found along a road in Dokada area,” said DPO Iqbal. He said it was an act of terrorism and a search operation is ongoing in the area.

The Elum mountainous region was considered a stronghold of militants in 2008-2009. Local people believe militants are still present in different parts of the mountains, which connect Buner, Swat and Shangla districts with each other.
