Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said on Friday that the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), besides major cartels, should also look into the matters pertaining to protection of rights of smaller consumers.
He stated this while speaking at a seminar to celebrate the World Competition Day, organised by the CCP here, which was attended in large numbers by government officials, representatives of regulatory organisations and the business community.
Dar said competition resulted in lower prices and more choices for consumers, it also fostered innovation, promoted entrepreneurship and helped prepare domestic firms for international competition. He added the CCP should also work on the protection of consumers including the implementation of consumer rights.

Glad for coverage on World Competetion Day by Tribune PK. I understand the Excellency honorable Ambassador to the European Union also participated and spoken on the occasion. One of the key area for a Code of Conduct on Advertising to be followed by the respective regulatory authority, or else the model of Europe. Excellency you know the European Transport Forum based in EU is an excellent example of the safe, economical transport on the model of the EU in Pakistan in Passenger and Freight. The first thing is acceptance of the internationally recognised standards of EU, and invite the EU Transport Operators to participate in Pakistan Transport sector as Operators, Assemblers, Contractors, Value Added Services franchise providers, Financiers, etc., etc. The reason this being the decade of Road Safety being organised by WHO and UN for Pakistan's compliance to Road Safety, and standards which are un-parallelled in the world. There should be a Transport Regulatory Authority which should learn from European Transport Forum how to manage and operate transport. Our buses operations in Karachi is the worst case, with no tickets issued, no passenger liability by the transport operator, no accident avoidance, etc. Pakistanis should learn the cost of their lives, and their belongings, in case of an accident. The CCOP should consider the Honorable EU Ambassador inputs to invite international participation for the transportation and provide a level playing field based on standards.
