The fair sex: ‘Incidents of violence against women rising’

Mumkin Alliance and Punjab University organise theatrical performance and a panel discussion

Mumkin Alliance organised a theatrical performance and a panel discussion on Friday in collaboration with the Punjab University’s (PU’s) Department of Gender Studies and Institute of Social and Cultural Studies.


The alliance took the initiative to end violence against women and to mark the 16 Days of Activism Campaign 2014. Chanan, a theatre group, staged an interactive performance on issues including domestic violence, gender-based discrimination and women protection mechanisms. A discussion to orient those present on the occasion with women-friendly laws and ways to access protection mechanisms for women followed the performance.

Punjab Commission on Status of Women Fauzia Viqar highlighted the commission’s efforts to improve laws, policies, programmes and services province-wide for the benefit of women. She underlined the efforts of the government to empower women and foster social change. Viqar also briefed those present on the recent legislation guaranteeing 33 per cent representation for women in all government decision making-bodies.

Former MPA Mehnaz Rafi said incidences of violence against women had been increasing. She said gender-based discrimination had to be eradicated to foster durable peace in society.

Strengthening Participatory Organisation regional head Salman Abid highlighted the organisation’s efforts to put an end to incidences of violence against women. The Mumkin Alliance is devoted to ending violence and gender-based discrimination.
