BHAKKAR: Election Commission of Pakistan officials on Monday started recounting votes cast during by-elections in PP-48 Bhakkar constituency, Express News reported.

The Punjab Assembly seat fell vacant earlier this year following the death of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) Najeebullah Khan Niazi. He was also a cousin of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan.

PML-N backed independent candidate Inamullah Khan Niazi won the by-elections after securing 47,593 votes.

Independent candidate Ahmed Nawaz Nawani lost with 47,013 votes and called for recounting of all the votes cast.

His request was initially rejected but later accepted. The recount of over 2000 votes is currently underway.
