QUETTA: The murderer of seven-year-old Hazara girl Sahar Batool has been arrested after he confessed to the attempted rape and murder of the minor, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP-Investigation) Quetta Asad Raza revealed on Friday during a news conference.

Raza said the perpetrator was Batool’s neighbour in PSP Colony.

Batool body was found near a garbage dump close to her house in the PSP colony on October 29. Her body bore multiple marks of violence, with visible scars on her body and red marks around her neck.

The perpetrator, Junaid Shahzad, while being investigated, confessed that he had tried to rape the seven-year-old .

“Sahar used to play with Junaid’s sisters. On the day [of the incident], his sister had gone to school and his parents were not there either,” the SSP said, quoting the suspect’s statement.

“The suspect said that the girl had claimed she would inform her parents about the rape attempt, which is why he strangled her to death,” he added.

The SSP said police already had information regarding the neighbor’s involvement in the crime, and added that it was not a sectarian case.

“Police are further investigating the incident,” Raza added.
