Mistaken identity: Man assumed dead returns home an hour before funeral

HARIPUR:

A man who had previously been identified as dead returned home an hour before his funeral in Jama village on Wednesday.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the police had found the remains of a man in his thirties who had been hit by a truck while crossing GT Road near Panian.

The body of the unidentified man was shifted to Women and Children Hospital. Noor Muhammad, a resident of Jama village, and other members of the family, identified the deceased as Shakil.

The family took the body to their village and the funeral was planned for Wednesday 10am. Family and friends were informed about the funeral and an announcement was also made at the mosque. However, at 9am on Wednesday, Shakil was spotted near Sabzi Mandi and was brought home, leaving family members stunned.

“I was left speechless when I saw Shakil come home—alive”, said Nadeem, one of his cousins. Since the deceased’s body resembled Shakil they were led to believe that he had died, he added. His relatives told the police Shakil was a heroin addict and would often go missing for several days.

The body was then shifted back to the hospital. According to hospital and police sources, the deceased was subsequently identified as Waris Khan, a resident of Darwesh village. Shakil could not be approached for comments.
