The incident came as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi had a brief meeting at the 18th Saarc summit in Nepal that clinched a deal to create a regional electricity grid.
Four or five gunmen split into two groups upon arriving in the town of Arnia, about four kilometres from the border, with one group attacking an army bunker and the other holed up in a house, a senior army officer said.
Three soldiers and three civilians were shot dead, said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, adding, "My condolences to the families."
He said four militants were also killed.
The gunmen did not infiltrate from the Pakistani side of the border, a senior Border Security Force official said.
"They came in a car to Arnia and took shelter in a bunker and targeted the army," he said.
The incident comes a day ahead of a visit planned by Modi to Jammu, where he will address two election rallies amid phased state polls that conclude on December 20.

Forget KAshmir, it was never yours in the first place. Read some history then say anything and at least be honest to yourself.
@Critic: They came with Pak bullets and Pak food packets. Read the news. More over, those who talk about Indian army retreating from Kashmir should understand that Indian Army is not a hired army. We Indians will drain every drop of our blood for our motherland and we are 140 Crore. No one can dare take Kashmir away from us. Keep coming, we will keep killing.
I have an honest question to people who passionately write about UNSC Resolution on Kashmir. Has anyone actually read the UNSC Resolution 47? Otherwise, how is it possible that keep repeating Clause A.2 while NEVER mentioning that it is CONDITIONAL on Pakistan following recommendations of the very 1st clause of the resolution. The Clause A.1 reads as follows: A - RESTORATION OF PEACE AND ORDER
The Government of Pakistan should undertake to use its best endeavours:(a) To secure the withdrawal from the State of Jammu and Kashmir of tribesmen and
Pakistani nationals not normally resident therein who have entered the State for the purposes of fighting, and to prevent any intrusion into the State of such elements and any furnishing of material aid to those fighting in the State;
(b) To make known to all concerned that the measures indicated in this and the following
paragraphs provide full freedom to all subjects of the State, regardless of creed, caste, or party, to express their views and to vote on the question of the accession of the State, and that therefore they should co-operate in the maintenance of peace and order.

"Why a sane man would like to join his/ her land to Pakistan which has all the worst ingredients .... when an option is available to join India which is developing economy , better opportunities in all respect..."
Then what is the problem asking the same from Kashmiris themselves in a neutral plebiscite? Or, you don't consider Kashmiris sane people?
Two countries gained independence in 1947. One has reached Mars and other is still trying to reach Kashmir, ha ha ha!!
Pakistan is getting isolated by continuing its proxy war from its soil but keeps issuing denials after denials which is not acceptable to international community as the former has been exposed several times in the past. UN has refused to intervene on Pakistan's recent plea on plebiscite and asked the latter to resolve all issues including Kashmir through dialogue with India.
@someone: As usual Indians blame Pakistan for anything that happens in India....why don't u check your policies against the Kashmiris, and do accept that a lot of them are unhappy with your police brutality. Also check your hindu extremists and their activities. What about the attacks on Pakistan soil...how many times have their army installations been attacked!....think about it and stop blaming your problems on Pakistan!
@Jalbani Baloch:
Given that your name is "Baloch", think twice before you get all self-righteous about "Kashmir", "human rights", "self-determination", "democracy" and other fancy words that Pakistanis have no practical familiarity with.
One can not discuss peace while a gun is held to his head. Better to figure how to prevail.
@Jalbani Baloch: India is not afraid, India wants unbiased plebiscite. That is one very important condition. Pak is crying about plebiscite, only to be snubbed by the world to mend its ways.
If the Indian army will push, the people will push back.. Hence this will happen as long as India doesnt allow the people their rights!
@Fouzia: absolutely right. :)
As per UN Let pakistan first vacate all POK of its military and civilians before any resolution can be thought of and also bring demography of POK to pre 1947 position , Let all non kashmiris , Punjabis vacate POK , Also get back J& K areas ceded to China.
Stop following jehadi propaganda , It is high time you wake up to realties. Sovereign nations be it India or pakistan dont change their boundaries be it in Balochistan or Kashmir.
They were not on indian soil indians were on their soil
@p r sharma: Then why India is afraid of holding plebiscite in fulfillment of the UN Resolution that gives choice to Kashmiris to decide about their own future. From your point of view, there is a high turn of voters in the election, which you term it as an acceptance of accession to India, so make it in legal by respecting the call of the UN. It is India, which is running away from giving the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir, whereas Pakistan stands ready to conduct such polls in its part of Kashmir, if India agrees to do so. It is time to suggest your Indian Govt. to the right of self-determination to the people of Kashmir.
Interesting to see that most Indian commentators here find it hard to believe that the oppressive Indian occupation of the land can result in the creation of a genuine resistance --- not every militant attack in Kashmir is related to the ISI. Grow up, please!
The deep state is once again trying to provoke India.
Kashmiris even during the winter season participated in the provincial assembly votes on 25th Nov.2014 and the participation is 71% ( of listed voters) in 1st phase. these are constituencies located in the Valley. . It indicates that they are willing and eager to elect their representative and expect good governance. Voting percentage has increased from the last election in the year 2009. No complaint of rigging from any party neither in previous election nor in the current one. . These participation signal to world that they are happy with the system and will use the election to change their representative if they fail to deliver the promises.. Fed with selective and distorted stories common men are being disillusioned about the scenario. Why a sane man would like to join his/ her land to Pakistan which has all the worst ingredients of economy , education, health services and of course militancy when an option is available to join India which is developing economy , better opportunities in all respect and freedom to faith. ( India has Muslims population equal to that of Pakistan , if not more ). Please also note that Indian army was posted in Kashmir region during the year 1990 when idle militants/ extremists after the cold war were infiltrated in India held Kashmir to destabilize India by a proxy war.Pakistanis directly responsible for the presence of Indian army at Kashmir .
These pakistani beggars come into India to beg and as they don't get alms here, they start attacking people. These morons need to be just eliminated from Indian soil for ever.
Fight to free Kashmir by Kashmiris shall continue till Indian Army retreats.
Indians shall start their old rhetoric of ISI and Pakistan.
India will never be at ease and peace until and unless they allow the Kashmiri the right of self-determination to decide about their fate whether to join India or Pakistan. It is apparently clearly to India that Kashmiris will never choose to accede to India, but would between the two options to join Pakistan or independence. Both options will prove detrimental to India, and that is the reason, it is trying to subdue Kashmiris one way or the other. The people of Kashmir will never live under the subjugation of India, and shall try to fight for their cause of emancipation from India. As for Pakistan, we have our all sympathies with the people of held Jammu & Kashmir and the people and the Government of Pakistan are morally bound to support their just struggle. The people of Pakistan are least concerned about the trade facilitation or economic ties with India at the cost of killings of Kashmiris. The day is not far-off, when Kashmiris will be able to get their birth right of exercising their free will to choose what suits to them.
"Zarb-e-Azb against all groups"..........no wonder why the world calls Pakistan "pathological liar."
70% turn out in election got them disparate one would think.
Good to hear if its pakistan's trip
good to hear if its pakistan's trick
India should do its best to capture them alive so that they can provide useful information as to who sent them and from where they came, etc. etc.
Why are they only "suspected" to be militants? What more proof than attacking an army base do you need that somebody is a militant?
The subject be Indian occupied Kashmir!
Well, Pakistan back to its old tricks.
