New Zealand defeat Pakistan, level series 1-1

Hosts succumb to an innings and 80 runs loss at the hand of the Kiwis

SHARJAH: Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq won the toss and chose to bat in the third and final Test against New Zealand in Sharjah on Wednesday.

Pakistan, leading the series 1-0 after winning the first Test in Abu Dhabi, brought in opener Mohammad Hafeez and paceman Mohammad Talha for Taufeeq Umar and Ehsan Adil.

Seamer Adil suffered a side strain after playing the second Test in Dubai, which ended in a draw. Hafeez missed the second Test with a hamstring injury.

New Zealand replaced all-rounder Jimmy Neesham with veteran left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori who is playing his 112th Test - a national record - and his first since July 2012.

Vettori, 35, whose back problems have confined him to limited-overs matches, beats the 111 caps compiled by former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

The result of the series is quite evident. NZ have fought back well after the loss in the first Test. They have brought Pakistan back on earth from cloud nine which will help them prepare better for T20s and ODIs and in the longer run for the upcoming World Cup. OUT! Yasir Shah comes in. Hits a four, smashes a straight six, blocks and then goes walking back after being dismissed LBW by Sodhi on the last ball. Asad Shafiq 51* and Muhammad Talha 0* will start the last session of day four for Pakistan.

OUT! Younus Khan is caught LBW by Boult on nought. He reviews the decision and two indicators say its the umpire's call. He departs. Misbahul Haq walks in to save the day for Pakistan while Hafeez is standing and just looking at partners come in go out. What can Pakistan do now to save this Test match? They will have to bat five sessions to ensure a draw and a win in these circumstances is most likely to be attached to NZ's name. Game on!

Ish Sodhi (22) and Mark Craig (65) resumed the first innings for NZ on day four. Pakistan started the bowling with Rahat Ali and Yasir Shah. NZ were able to add another 53 runs to their lead. Pakistan will come out to bat now. Four wickets for Rahat Ali and Yasir Shah and a brace for Muhammad Hafeez. Zulfiqar Babar and Muhammad Talha were denied wickets.

Brendon McCullum smashed a double-hundred but Kane Williamson missed out on his by just eight runs as New Zealand posted their highest ever total against Pakistan in the third and final Test in Sharjah yesterday.

For the time being Pakistan have looked completely lost after the day's break due to Phillip Hughes death. As Ricky Ponting said today that no one is able to play cricket due to the intensity of the sad event, Pakistan look most affected by it after Australia.
