KARACHI:

The provincial government has utilised merely 27 per cent of the education development funds that were released in the first quarter of the ongoing fiscal year.

The figures were revealed in a meeting held at Chief Minister House on Monday, chaired by chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, who was displeased with the utilisation of development funds in the education sector so far. He directed education minister Nisar Khuhro to ensure proper and in-time utilisation.

The education department's officials told him that around Rs566.9 million, which comes to around 27% of Rs2079.9 million, had been utilised in the ongoing fiscal year's first quarter. The under-utilisation of the budgeted amounts is a phenomenon not new to the education sector in the province. Since the Pakistan Peoples Party-led Sindh government's period in office from 2007, the actual utilisation of the budgeted amounts remained at an average of 77.5%, confirmed the Sindh Education Sector Plan 2014-18.
