Police official Haider Zaman said students of various classes had assembled outside their classrooms for the morning assembly when teacher Salim Jan sped into the premises. Zaman said Jan lost control over the vehicle, ramming it into the students as a result.
The policeman added 12 students and a sweeper were injured.
All of them were rushed to District Headquarters Hospital, Timergara where a 10th grade student, Abdul Basit, succumbed to his injuries.
Zaman said three of the injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar due to their critical condition. He added they later arrested the accused teacher and an investigation is under way.
Immediately after the incident, District Education Officer Dr Hafiz Muhammad Ibrahim formed a three-member committee headed by ADO Ali Haider to launch an enquiry.
The members of the committee went to the school and recorded statements of the school’s principal and other concerned people.
DEO Ibrahim expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended his sympathies to the bereaved family, assuring them of taking strict action against the accused teacher.
