KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered on Thursday the committee to re-convene a meeting to determine the ex-factory sugar price for the coming session by November 25. A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar, passed this direction while hearing a petition filed by the sugar mill owners challenging the government’s authority to fix price of sugarcane. They challenged Section 16 of the Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950, and the issuance of any official notification to fix sugar prices by government functionaries in pursuance of this law. During Thursday’s proceedings, the two judges were informed that in compliance of the court’s order passed on May 28 a committee had been constituted with the inclusion of representatives of the provincial chapter or zones of Pakistan Sugar Mills Association.
