LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday the government had given the biggest relief package of Rs16 billion in the country’s history to compensate victims of recent floods.

The chief minister said the government spent the public money in a transparent manner. He said all flood-affected people would be given financial assistance.

“The government has set an example of public service by ensuring quick distribution of compensation among flood victims. I am supervising the process of aid distribution. An effective system has been evolved to address complaints in this regard,” Sharif said.

The chief minister praised the committee, elected representatives and district administrations for their help in providing relief to flood victims.

Earlier, the PDMA director general briefed the meeting about relief and rehabilitation activities. He said pay orders of more than Rs6 billion had been given away to the calamity-stricken people over the last six days.

He said the second phase of distribution of financial assistance would be completed a few days.
