During a board meeting headed by lawmaker and GHDA chairperson Rafique Ahmed Jamali on Tuesday, GHDA officials discussed issues such as transfer of the tourist site's land from the revenue department to the authority and the release of funds from the provincial government.
The provincial government was requested to hand over the land immediately to the authority so that the schemes, according to the Master Plan of 1988, could be initiated.
The total land of the tourist site is about 225,000 acres and, according to Jamali, all the land is public property.
"The process of the transfer of land from the revenue department to the authority will be initiated soon," he told The Express Tribune. He said that people who are interested in building homes or wish to invest in commercial areas would be allotted lands once the land is transferred. "Employment opportunities will increase with the construction of commercial and residential areas," said Jamali.
The authority has recently constructed an eight-room facility and a restaurant at the hills. Hundreds of people from different parts of the country visit Gorakh, which lies at a distance of 400 kilometres from Karachi. "We'll soon chalk out the plan to accommodate even more visitors," said Jamali.
The GHDA was set up in 2008 and the Sindh Chief Minister was its chairperson. Last year, however, the provincial government decided to shift the chair of the authority to an elected Member of the National Assembly.
The GHDA faces a serious lack of funds. The chairperson said that the provincial government has been requested to release funds immediately so that construction can be initiated.
