GUANGZHOU: Olympic champion Jang Mi-Ran of South Korea and Iran’s world champion Behdad Salimikordasiabi were crowned the strongest athletes at the weightlifting event of the 16th Asian Games.

World record-holder Jang and Salimikordasiabi chalked up victories in the super-heavyweight class - the over 75-kilogramme category for women and over 105-kg category for men. Jang, a former four-time world champion, had notched up two silvers in previous Asiads but was not to be outdone this time around when she overcame a mediocre snatch to power through the clean and jerk for gold on lighter body weight after a great tussle with Chinese lifter Meng Suping.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old world champion nicknamed ‘Salimi’ carried on his country’s proud tradition after overcoming a bout of swine flu and finished on an aggregate of 440 kg, 12 kg clear of Jeon Sangguen of South Korea, with another Iranian, Sajjad Anoushiravani, taking bronze.

Table tennis treble for China

China scored a golden table tennis treble, winning the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles. Men’s top-seeds Wang Hao and Zhang Jike claimed their title after beating teammates and second-seeds Ma Lin and Xu Xin, eventually coming through 11-2, 12-10, 10-12, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3.

In the women’s event, Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia made a minor piece of history by becoming the first pair to ever defend a doubles title while Xu Xin and Guo Yan won the mixed doubles.

Iraq win first medal

Haeider Hamarasheid won Iraq’s first medal, picking up a bronze, and said he hoped it would set an example for young people in his homeland. Hamarasheid finished the men’s single sculls in 7:10.10 minutes, some five seconds behind gold medalist Bajran Takhar of India with Taiwan’s Wang Ming-hui second.

Meanwhile, Kuwait won their first gold medal when they picked up the men’s Trap team title at the shooting competition. The Kuwaiti trio of Khaledal Mudhaf, Naser Meqlad and Abdulrehman Al Faihan shot 352 to win the event by a single point over Lebanon.
