Ghulam Muhammed made his way to the top of a water tank around 10am during a cleaning session, which prisoners must take part in while serving their sentence, and began threatening to commit suicide unless he was reunited with his girlfriend, Najma.
Muhammed and his girlfriend allegedly killed her driver, and were both serving a sentence for the murder in separate prisons.
Sitting atop the water tank with a noose around his neck, Muhammed rebuffed all attempts to bring him down and threatened to commit suicide if any such efforts were made.
In an attempt to meet his demands, his girlfriend was brought to the scene from another prison. However, that didn't work either since he was adamant that she should first be brought up to him.
After numerous failed pleas by the police, Muhammed jumped off the tank in a bid to hang himself. However, a crane had already been positioned to rescue him. Muhammed hung for roughly four minutes before being freed from the noose by a rescue team.
As the rescue team brought Muhammed down from the tank he had lost consciousness but was still breathing. The convict has now been taken to hospital where he has regained consciousness and breathing normally.
