Business opportunity: Danish delegation leaves with a number of offers

KARACHI: The first official Danish delegation of businessmen that came to Pakistan to explore opportunities has left the country with a number of offers at hand.

Before leaving Pakistan, Danish businessmen said the response actually exceeded their expectations as they have managed to engage in advance-level talks with some Pakistani entrepreneurs.

The delegation’s last stop was Karachi but members were delighted to see the amount of interest in local companies from Islamabad and Lahore.

“We are in advance-level talks with at least three companies in Pakistan,” said ALECTIA Department Manager Design and Planning Thomas-Haagen Frederiksen. “Looking at the size of the youth population in Pakistan, I believe there are huge business opportunities for companies like ours.”

ALECTIA is a leading Danish consultancy company with specialised competence in process technology, occupational health and safety, business consulting, buildings, water, energy and environment.

Frederiksen said that his firm is looking to partner with dairy and meat processing companies. “We are in talks with some big companies in Pakistan that have large investments like $200 million or more. If companies of such scale improve their output, it would be great for Pakistan and its economy,” he added.

Cement sector

FLSmidth Area Sales Manager Klaus Sorensen said that despite strong competition, there is a huge potential of growth in the cement industry in Pakistan.

There are a number of Pakistani cement companies that have FLSmidth plants including Lucky Cement – the largest cement manufacturer in Pakistan with about 18% market share.

Ambassador satisfied

Looking at the positive response of Danish companies at the end of the tour, Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan Jesper Moller Sorensen said that he was satisfied with the outcome of the visit.

“The feedback from Danish companies is very encouraging for me. This means that our efforts are finally bringing out results,” he commented at an event that was organised in honour of the Danish delegation on Thursday night at a local hotel.

He said security was the biggest challenge that makes Pakistan a difficult territory for investment.

“Majority of the times I am answering queries about security concerns that Danish enterprises have for Pakistan,” he commented.

Danish ambassador said that he was confident that he will be able to bring more companies to Pakistan next time. Six Danish companies were part of the official delegation during the recent visit.

DK/PK - two countries that represent me and vice versa, are now working together at all levels. Except for security concerns, countries sees a lot of potential in PK. Good news - I am so happy for that development.
