Edhi, who is revered for running one of the country’s largest charities, was sleeping when up to eight gunmen barged into the foundation’s building, which is nestled in Karachi’s congested commercial hub.
They broke into storage vaults that contained five kilogrammes of gold, foreign and local currency worth millions of rupees and fled, leaving the worried octogenarian humanitarian worker to deal with the consequences.
“They [robbers] asked me about Edhi sahib. I said he is sleeping inside a room,” a visibly terrified staffer of the foundation said while talking to The Express Tribune.
The social entrepreneur, who is in his late 80s was still sleeping inside one of the rooms located on the ground floor of his foundation’s head office, when the men dressed in shalwar-kameez pointing handguns at him demanded the keys for the lockers.
While talking to Express News, Edhi said he was woken up from his sleep by the bandits who walked straight to the locker where the money and gold was kept.
“I thought they came to ask me about the Edhi centre but they started asking me about money. I don’t understand how they (bandits) knew that everything was kept in the cupboard,” he said.
“The money and gold stolen belonged to those who entrusted me with it,” Edhi said.
Even after he told them that he didn’t have the keys, they walked up to the cupboard and smashed it.” “They did not manhandle me,” he added.
His son, Faisal Edhi, confirmed that eight to ten men entered the centre and took his father and others present at the centre hostage. He hinted that someone from the staffers either current or former might have been behind the act.
Edhi’s son claimed the bandits fled with Rs50 million along with $400,000 and five kgs gold, much of which he said belonged to members of the public, who are allowed to store cash and valuables with the charity.
Security situation
There were no security guards at the welfare centre at the time of the incident and neither were any CCTV cameras installed. Police have collected fingerprints from the crime scene and have launched an investigation into the matter.
A case has also been registered at the Kharadar police station on behalf of Faisal Edhi against unidentified persons.
Subsequently, Kharadar SHO was suspended while an investigation team headed by Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo was also constituted to probe the case, which has shocked many across the country.
“We provided him with security but Edhi sahab asked us to withdraw. We are now trying to convince him about security and installation of CCTV cameras,” SSP Sheeraz Nazeer told The Express Tribune.
He said that the police are unwilling to rule out the possibility of the involvement of an insider.
Meanwhile, government officials including the prime minister, provincial governor and chief minister issued a sharp condemnation of the incident and called for an inquiry.
Edhi is credited for running the largest ambulance service in the country – his foundation has a network of offices around the world that raise funds to run what is Pakistan’s largest health charity.

Hence the cost to bilawal's jalsa is covered.
There is two benifits of this incidence , and both are positive . So there is nothing to curse the nation or Govt, Actually Religion also shapes the culture . Such distortions suggest that some thing is wrong and indicate the reasons as well , It is up to us to realize and take corrective measures . The othere benifit is that black money has now became white .It is well within the Pakistan . Edhi's work will not hindered due to this episode .But he has to explain the cause of such hording and it's source .
points to ponder:
Why was so much cash / valuables kept at a vulnerable location? Why would people keep their cash / valuables for storage at an Edhi center? what happened to bank lockers? Couldn't find a decent locker from any of those banks on I I Chundrigar Road?Even Edhi is not spared in the plunder of Karachi and its people under Wadera rule
@Naeem Khan: Any time an oranization or individuals hold so much cash and bullion, it is obvious that these valuables are illicit. These assetts are undecared, unreported and unrecorded and that is the defination of black money!
Does Mr.Edhi have any proof of the events that he described really occurred? After all his children are settled abroad.
@Ricky: What does this have to do with IK?
Only the worst of the person can steal from a charity
My only concern and question is "what was all that gold and foreign currencies doing with this charitable organisation"....extremely shady and raises quite a few question marks!...wake up law enforcement agencies PLEASE!!!
@Sultan Ahmed: why are you blaming pagans ? may they were muslims.
Every one in Karachi knows who are the 'robbers' but will not speak.Police does not care.
who are they? edhi should be investigated too, checks and balances should be for everyone
Why would they keep 50 million and kilos of gold and foreign currency in a cupboard. Seriously? Thats dumb.
Give IK the PM powers he would end it all in 30 to 90 days. If you don't believe me ask IK or PTI trolls. This society is rotten to the core and needs a foreign secular colonizer.
Money in millions of cash and gold stacked without realizing any necessity to have some kind of security is beyond my comprehension. I always thought respected Edhi Sahib is surrounded with advisors and consultants to run this institution.
Edhi has learned the hard way that no one is immune to the lawlessness in the country. These lowlifes will even rob their own mothers. But isn't it foolish to store so much cash and gold in an unguarded place devoid of any surveillance cameras? This is one instance where the victim, because of his naivete, bears some responsibility of the loss of public's money.
Statement made by Mr Edhi "The money and gold stolen belonged to those who entrusted me with it" sounds fishy. There should be a record of all donations made. I am sure people who took this knew it was illegal money. Does Pakistan have any banks where Mr Edhi could keep this money and gold.
What a shame! what is Karachi police doing.. bringing people to bilawal jalsa??
Somehow nothing is believable in Pakistan. Not much ethics left in its people.
These robbers will not become billionaires by stealing the money belonging to orphans, widows, the sick, and the hungry, mentally ill, and the homeless. But, your leaders have become billionaires with billions stashed in overseas bank accounts and choice properties in London, New York, and Paris by stealing the monies belonging to the people of Pakistan. Who do you feel most outrage against? These petty criminals, looters and dacoits, or the ones sitting in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi (sorry, Dubai)????
It is amazing that a charity would stash millions in currency and about 20 lbs in gold, why was he stashing this huge amounts of currency and gold in the office . Don't they know that banks would be safer place and they will be responsible for any robbery to their establishment. He may be philanthropist but I do question his methods to store millions in currency and gold. The question comes to mind Why was he doing this and for what purpose. Tax free charitable outfits are also answerable to the Revenue Department and it seems that they were not showing the real income they were receiving from the public. It does not make any sense and now his integrity will be questioned and rightly so. Is there any institution in Pakistan which is free of some shady dealings and are up and up.
Really, really low.
why was there so much valuables cash and gold in the office and not insured?
