Pakistan is under a relentless onslaught and vigorous assault from religious extremism. This religious fundamentalism has penetrated into every institution of the country. The worst affected of these is politics in the country.
The majority of Pakistan’s political parties, either because of ideology or out of fear, have surrendered, falling under the influence of religious extremism. Thinking it better to yield rather than stand up for a moderate Pakistan, these parties have developed direct and indirect working relationships with orthodox and extremist religious outfits to find their way into the corridors of power.
This trend was further strengthened in the last general election when obscurantist religious elements eroding the writ of the state terrorised and ousted all secular forces from the election arena through acts of violence and sabotage in which countless political workers and political leaders voicing moderation lost their lives.
In this suffocating political atmosphere, the minorities are finding it impossible to survive; moderates and enlightened people have started losing hope of living with dignity and peace in the dream that was the Quaid-e-Azam’s Pakistan.
What is all the more surprising is that all those political forces who have come onto the streets and protested vociferously against rigging in the election are none other than those who greatly benefitted from religious extremism and are the byproduct of religious-fanatic sentiments.
Their indignation is actually a covert protest against their ‘masters and mentors’, criticising them for failing to get the required majority so that they could rule the country. In other words, the on-going fight is actually between two factions of the same school of thought, both of which are protected and promoted by religious extremism. Therefore, whoever wins or loses in this contest, the ultimate losers will still be the moderates.
Moderation and liberal values are a virtue and instinct that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has inherited from his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and mother Benazir Bhutto. Both leaders believed in humanity and co-existence. Their commitment to the people of Pakistan was above all such prejudices. Bilawal Bhutto being highly educated and trained by Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari has the capacity to steer the country out of fundamentalism and to lead it according to the vision and injunction of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
Pakistan is beset with ceaseless internal challenges like poverty, illiteracy, energy shortage, unemployment, crimes against women and so on. However, the most pervasive challenge is to free society from the malevolent religiosity nurtured under the dictatorship of General Ziaul Haq and his protégés.
This extremism has poisoned the new generation and given further fillip to the clandestine internal and external support being given to the remnants of General Zia, whether they are sitting in the corridors of power or out protesting on the streets of Islamabad.
This nexus will do nothing but further destroy the young generation by extending support to them in the name of laptops or `reforms’ or `Naya Pakistan’. The nation needs the Pakistan that the Quaid-i-Azam founded in 1947 and which was strengthened by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto by giving it a consensus constitution in 1973 and the democratic Pakistan which Mohtarma Shaheed Benazir Bhutto founded on the basis of reconciliation and also laid down her life for the sake of democracy.
Bilawal Bhutto has the capacity and the vision to lead the nation, particularly the younger generation, to make a modern and moderate Pakistan. The Pakistan of Mr Jinnah in which all religious minorities would enjoy equal rights. The Pakistan of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, in which rapid and massive industrialisation would boost the crippled economy. The Pakistan of Mohtarma Benazir in which women’s empowerment would enhance their role in nation building.
The Pakistan of Bilawal Bhutto would be purged of religious bigotry and fanaticism. The nation, particularly the younger generation which constitutes 60 per cent of the population, cannot be misguided by mere slogans. They know the sanctimonious protesting forces in collaboration with extremists have a clandestine agenda to impose their autocratic extremist views in the country. Their agenda is destined to destroy the system and mentally paralyse and enslave the young generation. This is a part of international conspiracy which they want to implement.
The appearance of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is a clarion call against the extremist forces. The moderate citizens of Pakistan need to strengthen Bilawal to cleanse society of the bigots who want to destroy this beautiful country with their orthodoxy.
Today, Bilawal will follow in the footsteps of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and make history by addressing the largest public meeting ever held in the political history of Pakistan.
The PPP believes in the peoples’ power and Bilawal wants to reaffirm this pledge and strengthen his bond with the people of Pakistan. This rally is not simply a show of political strength but a commitment to the selfless service to Pakistan, its people. It is also a commitment with the father of the nation to restore and reclaim his Pakistan, the one that he had founded in 1947.

Mr.Minister, how high were you when writing this article. We all havent forgotten life under your supremo's leadership from 2008-2013 when thugs from all interior Sindh were out roaming around Karachi in Govt. registered SUVs and Vigos. No wonder why as a country we did aimlessely worse in our own history and broke all our previous records.
We have seen where the taxpayers money went in those five years so please... Wake up!
This is a joke. ET yields to pressure from political goons yet again. A provincial minister comparing a legend like Quaid with an asinine clueless kid born to a corrupt father who is shamelessly milking him for future gains. This is what we have come to. Sad, but not surprising.
Pakistan is no North Korea, Bilawal is no Kim Jong Un... Pakistan is fighting to get rid of these old age princes and princesses.. Hopefully this will happen soon
@Dr. Asad Sadick, Germany: Sir, all the status quo politicians are trying to exhaust this opportunity to reform the electoral system by offering proposals which are either impossible to implement practically or of only cosmetic consequence. The actual flaw lies in our balloting system. You give one answer window to two questions.
Choice of Person Choice of Part So if I choose the Party, the Person is automatically the same, and vice versa. This needs to be changed. Read: my blog at: KhalidImtiaz. Blogspot. ComMr sharjeel Memon, because of people like you, PPP is in such a mess !
I feel pity for myself and the Nation.....what a shame, sons of the sons of the sons and the same families will enslave us
Can somebody please ask Bilawal what he has done since last 43 years for the development of the rural areas of Sindh?
@Ash: I beg to differ. Bilawal is from Zardari family and not Bhutto family. So he is Bilawal Zardari. Fatima Bhutto is from Bhutto family. Similarly, after marriage to Zardari, Benazir should have been addressed as Benazir Zardari and not Benazir Bhutto. Zardari is playing with the word "Bhutto".
As his father Asif Ali Zardari has been claiming it in his regime but restored his millions of $$$$$ in Swiss banks and purchased properties abroad......
No wonder Quaid chose to die so soon after founding Pakistan Better to die of TB than temerity of the corrupts and their offspring
So far with all your speeches and statements you come across as a refurbished Megaphone of the feudals and the dynasties. I promise you that you won't go far With this agenda!!!!
@dharam:
I have to support you on this. Mr Memon's article aggrandises the PPP role and achievements in this country politics and this to be expected . Indeed Mr Z.A Bhutto founder of PPP was a legand, a statesman, and a great orater. Inspite of his national and international stature he too had a conspicious role in splitting the country. He was driven by the lust of power and refused to accept the results of a fair, democratic and transparent election of 1971.
He refused a peaceful transfer of power to Awami League a legitimate and rightful winner of the democratic process. His daughter Ms Benazir Bhutto a dedicated, young vibrant and inspiring politician's credibility was ruthlessly destroyed by the corruption of her own husband, so much so that when she realised it and sidelined him , the fate did not give her opportunity to redress and restore her own credibility.
Now an heir apparent Mr Bilal Zardari is launched all in the name of Bhutto's legacy. Unfortunately this legacy still has some relevance in political market of illiterate and ill informed masses of interior Sindh and remote Punjab.
Thanks to the two controlling aristocratic and oligarch forces to keep literacy from flowing into these remote and far fetched areas. The day literacy reached to these deprived and subjugated people the era of family politics will come to an end. It is in the interest of current bigot political forces to keep the litearacy and numeracy away from the masses for as many decades as possible.
There is no such thing as religious extremism, the more one learns about the religion of Islam, the more enlightened and peace he seeks. There are people who are liberal or conservative and have emotional energy and their behaviour regardless of their faith is dependent upon several factors including education and developement. Can Bilawal survive given the circumstances as they are, the khaki spread across the country and the opposition taking to street demonstration instead of a debate in the parliamet? Pakistan needs institutional reforms to decolonise their structures.
Rex Minor
Qaid-e-Azam's Pakistan? Does anyone remember that?
i think quaid e azam mazar has become a joke. place for all jokers to come to make joke of public. i feel bad for mr jinnah that after creating country this is how powerful ppl of his country disrespect his resting body place. to make platform for corruption and joke...
He has repeated all what Imran already said in his speeches. He only left out the tax evasion of his family and the source of the ill-gotten wealth of his parents. Age is no obstacle in becoming a great leader but for that you need brains. Poor chap is being used as a trump card to salvage the declining party. No match for IK.
@Ejaz Alam: ".... The only qualification he has is that he’s son of BB thats all. This doesn’t qualifies him to be the leader of the nation."
In Pakistan, the only required qualification, is pedigree. He is the great grandson of someone who was bestowed upon the title of Sir by Gora Saab Bahadur.
After IK launched the youth, SS copied him by distributing laptops, after this PPP woke up & launched Bilawal....too little too late...where is your slogan of roti, kapra aur makan....? that was the vision of ZAB & BB...now Bilawal nor any one from present PPP is not talking of this slogan, where this slogan gone...gone with the wind ? Rahul Ghandhi till now has not been able to come into the forefront in Congress led party & you expect Bilawal to become next PM...? should we cry or laugh ?
congrats, going back by 65 odd years. That's progress.
First of all he is not Bilawal Bhutto, he is Bilawal Zardari. Secondly though BB wanted Bilawal to be like her Father ZAB rather than her husband Asif Zardari, Bilawal inherited more Zardari genes than Bhutto genes, which are now being trained on Bhutto Style. However, so far this seems to be an exercise in futility because Zardari ones are MORE tenacious than Bhutto ones.
@Ash: Expecting someone who can change his race / surname in the love for power to deliver for people is an affront to common intellect
"Bilawal to restore Quaid-e-Azam’s Pakistan"
Like his father and mother did! And, look at what we got, and what they got?
Which younger generation is following him? Don't be delusional. We want to eradicate this Jahalt not be a part of it.
The title of this fictional post should've been: "Because Bhutto pays my bill".
it would be a biggest curse for me if i see this young man as a PM of pakistan. I would literally leave this country... Grand Father = PM Mother = PM Now son is ready...we are becoming slave of third generation!!
This kid is full of hot air. His grandfather did everything to undermine Jinnah's Pakistan starting with splitting the 2 wings of the nation. Who said "Eeider hum Uder Thum"??
Fatima Bhutto nominated Zardari in FIR FOR murder of her Father By Zardari, she had to run away cus of Zardari, BB murdered in same style . People of sindh say what goes around comes around so please don't fool us by your theatrics
Bilawal who? For the love of god i don't know how this guy is getting so much attention?? We seriously need quality education for our masses
'Moderation and liberal values are a virtue and instinct that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has inherited from his grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and mother Benazir Bhutto. Both leaders believed in humanity and co-existence.'
[...]
'However, the most pervasive challenge is to free society from the malevolent religiosity nurtured under the dictatorship of General Ziaul Haq and his protégés.'
The same Zulfikar Bhutto who institutionalised and legalised anti-Ahmedi discrimination and set Pakistan on the path of institutional Islamization?
'Malevolent religiosity' initiated by none other than Zulfikar Bhutto himself.
And the same Benazir Bhutto who is widely known as the 'Matron of the Taliban' in Afghanistan?
Wonder what 'humanity and co-existence' the author is referring to.
God help Pakistan if Bilawal Bhutto is to follow in the footsteps of his progenitors.
Chalo, now Bilawal has come up with Qaid's Pakistan slogan to copy PTI's popularity. Bilawal, who is concerned about his own security at the jalsa, talks about bringing change in Pakistan? I wonder what will happen of Pakistan!
First, Bilawal should restore his Urdu, Pakistan comes at a much, much later stage.
Dynastic politics is a curse for whole south Asia indian sub continent. It curbs the natural leaders coming to power and serve the country. Its like a family business. Illiteracy and poverty are two reasons why it is alive. to hav a pure democracy dynastic politics must end.
What has bilawal done on his own to prove that he can lead the youth ??
Dear author, Under ur eyes the water of DHA karachi has vanished Where has it gone?
No other functioning democracy would see a party come.to power which elects the x leaders son out of sympathy, only a feudal system based a so called.democracy can be such a joke, but the.sad part is he will.come to.power and lead the nation into further turmoil . may Allah guide all.of.us,
PPP is a spent force. Bhutto's name cannot be sold anymore.
Even though i am not favor of articles like this written with an intention to have political advantage just before party's bid day for reclaiming its lost territory...Sharjeel sb must be applauded by the party if its really written by himself.
If we look at the center stage of this peace of writing its PPP brave stand against terrorism yes i will admit and appreciate for being able to be truthful to nation on such sensitive issue in country where fanatics have made impossible co existence and presence of dialogue.
Let's go back a little bit and take BB assassination and Lal Mosque as an example both PPP and PML N has misled the Government in same manner in resent elections PTI and PML N has misled the nation.
Mushraf himself and his Govt. was made responsible for both incidents First for BB Murder for which even TTP has accepted responsibility PPP still advocate that it was Mushraf who has helped assassinating...so what PPP has achieved in 2008 people's sympathy and made its way to share power along with its coalition...and just look on words of first speech in parliament of Mr. Asfan Yar Wali "Ye Khanda be Mera Hay, Yeah Bandook B Mere and Yeah Seena b Mera Hay" they were also successful in giving impression that it is Mushraf because of whom the poor people are turning to terrorists. Same goes for Lal Mosque Asif Zardri declared it Katal League. So its proved through both above cases that PPP and its allies did same to this Nation in 2008 Elections what NS and IK did in 2013 to win public sympathy.
All were and are wrong just sold the brutal concept of fake democracy on us and used us first to step down Mushraf who was really doing well for Pakistan...he did not promise for roti kapra and makan neater for insaaf and for Roshan Pakistan...all he promised was "Pakistan Comes First" and delivered all what other have failed too. I am sorry Mr. Mushraf for not supporting you on time when it was needed.
You were real democrat its mean nothing to me if you were uniformed you ensure inclusion of all in power "women, minorities, locals govt, establishing institutes, independent media" and let all enjoy fruits of democracy and that even went against you.
So all we need is....
7 consecutive years down the road and the BB mission has yet not taken off? And yes as many have earlier commented, it takes a lot more than genes alone to lead a nation And other than that his ancestors genes too didn't do much, so please wake up and think twice on what basis can you comment : Bilawal to restore Quaid-e-Azam's Pakistan! The PPP on the other hand has been a COMPLETE failure in terms of good governance, minimising corruption and incompetence AND pleaseeeee we don't want this family politics, it seems the province has been hijacked by the Bhutto clan!
Corruption.....shhhhh, no one will notice. This reminds a year old child that closes his eyes and thinks everyone disappeared, and opens his eyes again to see everyone appear again. the author seems to be mesmerized in similar manner.
One humble advice for this bhutto..."Aba jee say bach keh rehna".
I don't know if saying trained by Asif zardari is something to be proud of.
How does Bilawal propose to steer the country out of fundamentalism? Even if we take what you say for granted, there is no actual plan or action that the people can even learn from or take into consideration.
@sane voice: Not that I am a huge fan of Bilawal, infact i doubt his credentials and pretty much dislike him but your argument has alot of holes. first of all we all remember Mohtarma was attacked in Karachi hence the security measures can be justified. Secondly saying its the only party that locks down the city is again wrong. How many times have other political parties locked down Karachi in a blink of an eye? Best way to reject Bilawal is to NOT vote for him, not make baseless comments.
Bilawal in Imran khan out...!!
I think this article wholeheartedly reflects the mindset of a typical PPP worker. I still don't understand how a senior minister such as Memon thinks Bilawal is the next Bhutto when he has been proven so immature time and time again. The author is also right when he says the younger generation cannot be misguided by mere slogan: Bilawal's rhetoric is anything but "Bhutto Zinda hai."
Clearly the writer is a paid jayaala or someone living in the cuckoo Land.
Are you kidding me?!
Imran is going to make "Quad e Azam's Pakistan", this kid is going to "build restore Quaid e Azam's Pakistan". Thank you Altaf Bhai and MQM for reminding the nation that Pakistan must be run according to Quaid e Azam's idealogy by raising the slogan "Humey Quaid e Azam ka Pakistan chahiye" Thanks once again. Your vision is being followed by opponents as well.
You must be kidding yourself, Mr Memon - Bilawal lead the nation! God help us all! We have had enough of his father! His grandfather and mother were on a different level. He will NEVER be of that calibre.
Why is this opinion piece in the headlines?
If Siyasat is a family business, then I think it was Fatima Bhutto's turn to lead the Jiyalas not Bilawal's. One cannot become part of Bhutto's family by adding the caste 'Bhutto'.
Pakistan is better off without Siyasat.Siyasat is Ibadat but not these days.
Do not desecrate the great Quaid. He would never let within a mile some one of such kind.
May Allah protect Pakistan from dynasties and their remnants!
Nd yours is the only political party that needs to lock down the entire city for security concerns but doesn't fear sny kind of extremism
I would like to know the basis of this analysis. He has never lived in Pakistan, he has not ever been in a leading legislative position, he is young and inexperienced, barely out of college, and his entire campaign seems harried and forced in a bid to save the PPP within changing political atmosphere. It will take a lot more than a boy with Genes to be the saviour of the nation. And to be honest, his mother didn't do very well as PM either, and she had more Bhutto genes than Baby Bhutto!!!!
He can't be the leader of the nation as he has no capability to do so. The only qualification he has is that he's son of BB thats all. This doesn't qualifies him to be the leader of the nation.
Clearly the writer has been brain washed and probably mentally deluded.
Great article for The Onion or any other Satire News site.
Then better to remove your father and his friends from party.
I dont think anyone at this age has the capacity to lead a nation. On one one side we have a great leader (IK) with demonstrated experience in leadership and on the other side we have this young dude whose only credential is that he is from the Bhutto family. His mentioned capacity here does not justify logic.
