Teachers who were selected through National Testing Service (NTS) marched from Haq Nawaz Park to GPO Chowk in DI Khan on Sunday to protest against the non-payment of their salaries. The rally held up traffic for hours.
The demonstrators, united under the All Dera Teachers Association, held placards and banners inscribed with demands of the immediate payment of their salaries.
They warned they would boycott classes if the pay was not released. While addressing the rally at GPO Chowk, one of the protesters, Musa Khan, said more than 1,200 teachers were recruited by the NTS in various ranks of the education department five months ago, but none had been paid.
Yasir Mustafa, another demonstrator, said the teachers were going through a financial crisis due to the non-payment of their salaries, adding NTS employees in other districts like Bannu and Tank were being paid.
