Opposing new taxation measures

Letter November 15, 2010
There is nothing ‘reformed’ about the new taxation measure.

KARACHI: This is with reference to your report of November 13 titled “Heckles greet controversial bills in NA”. The bill that has been introduced is more or less the same as the old legislation. Who is the government trying to fool? There is nothing ‘reformed’ about the new taxation measure. This tax will put an additional burden on tax-paying citizens and hurt the economy. There is no way that the government will ensure that those who evade their taxes will pay this tax.

One has to question the efficiency and competence of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in being able to administer this complex tax. Those who are opposing the levy of this tax will be remembered and Pakistanis will remain grateful to them for taking a pro-people stand: hats off to the PML-N, MQM, PML-Q and the ANP for opposing this tax.
