ISLAMABAD: A delegation of Awami Workers Party (AWP) urged Senator Afrasiab Khattak, chairperson of the Senate Sub-Committee on Human Rights, to urgently intervene and provide justice to Baba Jan and 11 other political workers in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B). In September, an anti-terrorism court awarded life imprisonment to 12 people accused of vandalising property, attacking public servants and ransacking arms and ammunitions from a police station in Hunza in 2011. However, AWP workers insisted Baba Jan and his companions had been booked under false charges. They informed the senator about their plans to organise a peaceful protest throughout G-B and Pakistan to support their cause. According to AWP leaders, Baba Jan and his companions turned themselves in because they are committed to a non-violent political struggle. Senator Khattak pledged to investigate the matter, make public all details related to the case and table a resolution on the matter in the next Senate session.
