Eid mania: Vegetable prices go up ahead of Eid

ISLAMABAD: A surge in the prices of vegetables was recorded before Eidul Azha as profiteers hiked prices in the wholesale market.

The prices of potato sharply increased in the past two days with price of potato from Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) spiking from Rs50 to Rs55 at the wholesale rate and from Rs75 to Rs82 per kg in the local wholesale market. The potatoes from Punjab were available at Rs 65 per kg.

Sources informed that the increase in prices was because the supply from G-B had stopped. They further said that the prices will continue to remain high until the steady supply form G-B resumes.

In addition, onion which was previously sold at Rs34 per kg at the wholesale market escalated to Rs40 per kg due to the increasing demand as the use of onion and some other vegetables including garlic, ginger and coriander and green chili increase many folds during Eid.

Ginger was being sold at Rs500 per kg but is now available for Rs 525 per kg. Similarly, the price for garlic has increased to Rs125 per kg from Rs100 per kg. The price of tomato too has increased from Rs60 per kg to Rs70 per kg at the wholesale level.

Traders blame the sit-ins at Constitution Avenue for the fluctuation in prices as they claim transporters continue to face random road blocks which affects the supply of goods.

A reverse trend was also witnessed in the markets this Eid. As the days draw closer to Eid, price of chicken usually falls. However, the price of chicken has also escalated this year from Rs107 to Rs125 per kg.
