In the first singles frame, Shahram Changezi beat Fung Kwok Wai 32-15 while Imran Shahzad lost to Marco Fu 57-22 as he made a break of 57 leaving the score levelled at 1-1.
Pakistan regained the lead through the doubles win when Sohail Shahzad and Imran overcame Fu and Chan Kwok Ming 69-10 and Changezi sealed the victory defeating Fu 20-16 in the reverse singles.
“Defeating Hong Kong was tough,” Changezi told The Express Tribune. “Marco is a professional and generally cueists from Hong Kong are tough to beat. But this victory boosts our confidence against Iraq in the quarter-final today.”
Earlier, Pakistan also defeated Kuwait 3-0. Imran beat Ahmed Al Tarkait 86-54 in the first singles frame and Sohail outplayed Meqdad Taqi 85-13 in the second match. Changezi and Imran beat Ahmed Al Tarkait and Meqdad Taqi 73-18 in the doubles match and assured Pakistan’s place in the last-16.
Pakistan baseball team defeated Hong Kong in their first baseball match. In the shooting event all four Pakistan players failed with both the men and women not being able to qualify for the next round. Judo also saw two of Pakistan’s representatives, Hussain Shah and Zahid Iqbal, lose in their very first matches.
China shoots to glory
China dominated the start of the shooting event as it won a gold in both the team and individual titles in the men’s ten-metre Air Rifle competition, taking their total gold tally to 19.
Japan, S Korea grab golds
Japans total gold tally stood at four golds, one in women’s triathlon, two in swimming and one in Judo. South Korea stood at four golds as well after grabbing one gold in shooting and three in Judo.(WITH ADDITIONAL INPUT FROM AFP)
