Till Thursday afternoon, the National Institute of Health, Islamabad had confirmed the presence of the virus in four-month-old Zubaid, son of Zafar, a resident of Jehangirabad village in Sheikhan union council, Peshawar.
According to an official of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa health department, the child had not received a single dose of the oral polio vaccine. He added Sheikhan UC is located along the border with Khyber Agency and a majority of the area’s children could not be vaccinated in the government’s much vaunted Sehat ka Insaf drive.
However, by the late evening, six more children had tested positive for the virus. These included one from Peshawar, two from Khyber Agency and one each from Karachi, North Waziristan Agency and Mardan. The samples had been collected between September 3 and September 20.
So far, out of the 194 total, 134 cases have been reported from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, 35 from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 18 from Sindh, five from Balochistan and two from Punjab.

@the Skunk: Why you blame politicians. What about mullah-military alliance ..?
You must blame yourself too because you are supporting wrong people.these people were and are in power last 50 years.so they are responsible whatever happening bad in pakistan.last 50 years these politicians become richer and richer and country were getting poor and poor, would you blame PTI for last 68 years.make your facts right.@sterry:
@UJ: Other issue is that Polio vaccine invented by Jewish People.
@sapeace: For that you have to implement child rights for that. Circumcision will become an issue then. Mullah created a lot of issues in India too otherwise India would have become polio free a year or two back.
@the Skunk: You can blame anybody but the real culprits. Healthcare is a provincial subject and only KPK govt is responsible. But wait they are too busy for lusting for power and away from their own homes for too long. Can we be honest for a change, please?
Well done! Shabash! Nawaz, Shahbaz, and Hamza Sharifs, Pervez Rashid, Ahsan Iqbal, Saad Rafique, Rana Sanaullah (Gulu Dutt missing) all talk about progress. Haaah! This progress? Polio vaccines are not synthesized in Pakistan and we get them fee from oversea CHARITABLE FOUNDATIONS. So, what happens to the vaccines? This is progress in IGNORANCE AND DISEASE. A BIG V for the Taliban. Salams
Time to leave Pakistan.!
Most of the affected families think of polio as a conspiracy and thats why they didnt get their child vaccinated. Some illiterate ULMA has stopped them to taking polio vaccines, as they think polio drops are part of government birth-control strategy, even if it is, we cant afford rampant growth in population in this country, illiteracy is on peak!
Polio cases are mostly coming from Pakhtoon areas and KP obviously. You dont need to put that much effort to connect the dots as to where the problem isand what stupid mentality is behind it. I wish we had a polio vaccine drone to "drone" these people..
Various Pakistani political parties are running their provincial govts as a model of what they are capable of. When people were dying in Tharparker Sindh everybody targeted the provincial govt of PPP. Now with billions of Rs. spent in Islamabad on Dharna, if the same resources were spent on KPK the diseases would disappear. Like smallpox once Polio is controlled we would not hear about it ever again. I would beg KPK leadership to take their men and resources and put their money where their mouth is. They want to spread the light in every place in Pakistan while KPK is alight! This many followers would have vaccinated each kid in KPK in a few weeks. Please please it is never too late to start a good thing.
This is the result of having some of the lowest numbers in the world for health expenditure as a percentage of GDP. We should reduce it further and spend more on defence instead. Our future army will be full of cripples and illiterate people.
Pti is taking the country down the tubes!
@IndianAngelKumarRashid: Why not work with India?
How sad that poor children have to totally unnecessarily suffer for the rest of their lives affecting their physical, psychological welfare.
Please do something Pakistan. Don't fail them like this.
These parents do not deserve children, if they want to follow some mullah why shuld the child pay a price.
In the world only in these countries you find find new cases of Polio
Somalia Afghanistan Pakistan
The real reason why Polio is up is because some selfish people in Pakistan want to do dharna and waste money instead of working with the majority elected government to make the country better. I blame this on PTI and PAT who are hurting the country.
This criminal govt aint gonna do anything. IK should let his party workers go into FATA and start polio campaign ASAP.
Who cares for Polio..??
Am father of a 8 month old ,,,, it gives me nightmares even to think a child getting polio :`(
Sehat ka Insaf couldn't work in Peshawar district even? Work required, not re-branding national Extended Program for Immunization (EPI) that all provinces do under federal oversight. Real work required, not TV ads or social media campaigns.
Very sad.If only people could work together.Dont work with India, atleast work with Arab countries to eradicate polio in Pakistan.Children, deserve better.Funds can be easily raised among rich Arab states. But who will bell the cat.
