HYDERABAD:

A semi-urban commercial area in Sanghar turned into a battleground as the supporters of former provincial adviser Shahid Nizamani engaged in a violent clash with the police on Tuesday.

The incident, in which two policemen were injured after being hit by stones, took place in Nizamani Muhallah. Nizamani is a member of the Pakistan Muslim League - Functional. According to police officials, the Nawabshah police raided Nizamani’s residence along with the local police to arrest two suspects, allegedly wanted in a kidnapping case registered with the Nawabshah police. However, the supporters of Nizamani pelted stones at the police, said Sanghar SSP Dr Farrukh Lanjar.

"They fired aerial shots due to which the police responded with gunfire and teargas," he said. "However, no citizen was harmed."

According to the SSP, an FIR has been registered at the Sanghar police station under sections 324 and 353 against Nizamani and others for obstruction of duty and attacking the police. However, only one suspect, Ali Sher Keerio has been arrested.

On the other hand, Nizamani blamed the police for 'politically victimising him and his supporters'. He claimed that a few days ago he wanted to register an FIR against some Bugti tribesmen who killed one of his men in an attempt to occupy his land. "We were threatened to withdraw the case."
