Modi met Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and other key US officials at the White House for a private dinner, ahead of formal talks in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
Washington hopes that the visit, following the landslide election victory of Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party in May, will turn a page in relations with New Delhi which are deeply valued but have been under strain in recent years.
Modi and Obama sat down under a gilded chandelier in the antique-festooned blue room of the White House, in a group of 20 officials of both sides, including Secretary of State, John Kerry and Indian Foreign Minister, Sushma Swaraj.
Despite the energy-sapping itinerary of high level summits and jet travel, Modi was expected to just take tea and lemonade as a part of the nine day religious fast that he observes every year.
Both nations issued a joint "vision statement" promising that their "strategic partnership" would work to combat terror threats, respond to humanitarian disasters, prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, as well as "mitigate" the impact of climate change.
Modi warmed up for the White House visit by basking in a rock star welcome in New York where he spoke to thousands of members of the Indian diaspora at the Madison Square Garden Sports Arena, and addressed the United Nations.
Indian American activists have pressed for years to rehabilitate the image of Modi, who was denied a visa to the United States in 2005 on human rights grounds over anti-Muslim riots in his home state of Gujarat.
Modi denied wrongdoing and his charge over violence that killed more than 1,000 people.
Since he took office, Washington has made strenuous efforts to court the new Indian leader - sending several cabinet level delegations to New Delhi and pushing for an early visit to the United States.
"This is a historic and pivotal moment in the history between our two great democratic nations," said a senior US official.
As he arrived in the United States on Friday, Modi said in an article in the Wall Street Journal that "India and the US have a fundamental stake in each other's success."
"The complementary strengths of India and the US can be used for inclusive and broad-based global development to transform lives across the world."
The White House took that as a sign, that despite some nettlesome differences notably over trade, Modi was committed to a relationship that US officials see as a fulcrum of Obama's policy of rebalancing US foreign policy towards Asia.
"What we are hearing from our Indian counterparts and what gives us tremendous excitement and confidence in the direction that we're moving is a desire to work across all areas of endeavor," another official said, predicting common ground on bilateral issues and regional and global security.
US officials have welcomed Modi's vows to slash red tape confining India's economy and his overtures to business leaders who have long chafed at restrictions on foreign investment in the country.
But Washington is concerned about New Delhi's recent move to block a key World Trade Organisation pact that would streamline customs procedures and boost global commerce.
Modi said that he was in favor of unfettered trade, but said commerce must be done in such a way that enhances India's capacity to feed its most impoverished citizens and protect its emerging middle class.
He said that despite some differences with Washington, the wider relationship could still improve.
"It is not necessary we should have comfort in everything, even between a husband and wife, there is never 100 percent comfort," Modi joked at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the two sides would also discuss the future of Afghanistan and the global fight against militant groups such as al Qaeda and the Islamic State.
Modi issued a public warning to the United States Monday not to repeat its "mistake" in leaving Iraq by pulling out of Afghanistan too soon.
"Because after such a rapid withdrawal in Iraq, (and) what happened there, the withdrawal process in Afghanistan should be very slow.
Both sides are eager to repair the damage inflicted by a recent series of spats, including a crisis last December when US authorities arrested and then strip-searched an Indian diplomat in New York for allegedly mistreating her housekeeper.
US officials have insisted that a lawsuit leveled against Modi by a human rights group in New York over the Gujarat massacre will not detract from the visit. As a foreign head of government Modi enjoys diplomatic immunity.

For those people who are talking non sense about Modi, for them I have following lines to read, you will get to know why he got elected:-
He is one of the most honest leader we have, can you believe he was chief minister of a state for so long, yet you will not find any relative of him in any govt. post or so.
He works 18-19 hrs a day, and a workaholic.
His home state Gujrat is one of the best place to do business, you will not find any problem from govt machinery. One story is there, once a business wanted to meet him for some business setup and he asked some time from the CM, the reply was to this business man was - Please let us know when you want to meet him, he will find time (from his so busy schedule) and will be very happy to meet you.
So without knowing about him, don't talk just anything. Don't go into 2002 riot loop, it was started by a particular community by burning innocent hindu people...
@N.Sid: if a chaiwala in our country looks better and has better personality than nawab oops Nawaz then I get what you mean(sarcasm). Just curious if your theory is true why haven't your country won worlds top beauty pagent both men and woman in "beauty" contest while your neighbour nation has hordes of it? Dude you havnt travelled length and breadth of your country much less a country that's ten times larger than you. One that is known in the world for being multi-ethnic-religion-race-color-features-language-dressing-food-climates. A country that stretches from icy Himalayas in North to backwater lagoon, beaches in South Kerala, from west coast of Gujarat to Bay of Bengal in East+ North east. Come out of frog in the well mentality. World is a beautiful place. Vanity,narccissm, self-entitlement has brought your country to where it is today. Why reach moon and Mars like other stupid nation, when you are already in your head there with your ego? Good luck to your nation wherever you headed with such king frog in well approach. not into +5 -5 thing. My pm gets ten on ten for doing his job = hardwork,sincerity and governance.
I am disgusted at the intellect level of most Pakistanis. Some are saying he is a tea seller and some that he is ugly. Look at Pakistan as a whole. What a sick and pathetic country it has turned out to be. Moderator, do me a favor. Let this comment go thru. I will be interested in seeing if some intellectual pakistanis have something constructive to say about this.
Mr Modi is just a visitor: why are all the zoo animals getting hysterical? OK, that's a simple one: because he won't throw them any leftovers.
@Soofia Malik::Do not be sarcastic.LEARN
Comments like Aisha are either designed to provoke a response or to illustrate the absolute immaturity of the writer. Either way we don't have to rise to the bait. Education teaches us to analyse everying in a pragmatic manner and react accordingly. If Pakistanis want a good looking leader instead of an effective one so be it.
As much as I would like Modi to be the answer to our problems the proof sadly will be in the pudding. If in 10 years India is on the right trajectory then we can be proud of him and that should silence the critics. We will all have to work to achieve his vision and our dream. It's not just his responsibility.
@Aisha: What do you mean by Modi is ugly. He is an Indian, about 5 percent of Indians are good looking.
@BaglaBhagat: Surprising you can not spell Gandhi. No problem, rest of the world including your Christian benefactor Obama can. When you try to belittle a person whom rest of the world reveres as 'apostle of peace' you are actually displaying what a petty person that you are. I am curious to know whether your pathetic culture has produced even one person remembered across the world for something good ?
@Aisha: Better an ugly leader who works for you rather than a handsome one who leads you to perdition. LOL Do you remember Pakistan was once ranked higher than India in economic development ? Thanks to your handsome and good looting leaders you are where you are. There is another handsome one waiting in line. I bet he will be the last one. You have got too many last chances but I know your country is not gonna make it. Stop thinking that the world owes you anything, they are just giving you the long rope.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: So in your personal court you have convicted him what is your proof? Are you a judge or something a trait that is common in your part of the world where judgement is passed on the whim? What makes you think that God will punish him? You will have to die to see that right?
@Aisha:
Sorry aisha, nawaz is no stud either, at the moment he seriously needs to redo a hair job once again.
We must be very much judicious in our comments and should not criticize just for criticism and likewise none should praise just for praise. We cannot and should not ignore the personal merits of Modi and likewise we should not belittle Nawaz as well. Iqbal Hadi Zaidi
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan:
Narrow minded people like you will never able to understand the greatness and of Hinduism.
It's easy to cretisize any other religion, but it requires courage to accept the truth, that obviously u don't have.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: Your mockery of Hindu faith was in poor taste. I am not going to drop to your level and do the same to your faith. This obsession with religion sounds the death knell for countries like yours.
@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan: Can there be one conversation where u guys don't try to push religion down others' throats or not try to belittle other's practices.
@jssidhoo
You mean to say Pakistan will develop so much that it will join Somalia & Ethiopia club? You are giving too much false hope to Pakistan...
@Soofia Malik: Indians are proud to have a PM who used to be a tea seller.... Because first it speaks of an improvement in the social system and second it is a commendable feat for the individual and highlights his tremendous grit and determination. I am sure you are very happy with your feudal lords.
@Aisha: He is not entering a beauty contest is he? As for making even Obama look handsome..... People have drooled over obama's personality and charisma .
Fasting, praying to idols won't help Modi when he comes in front of God about his murder and rape of innocent Indian Muslims.
@Rex Minor: You Indians need to stop with the racism against Africans if you don't want people to be racist against you. Plenty of beautiful Africans as well. We should evolve beyond this.
Those trying to distract from the real issue, I am from KPK, Balochistan area. You guys really don't know anything about us.
@Aisha: Sour grapes story
@Aisha: We can give you Rahul Gandhi with his fair skin and dimple cheeks make him your PM he with Bilawal will make sure you join the Somalia & Ethiopia club .
Fasting, praying to idols, but know Modi, if you don't repent, you will enter Hellfire along with all your supporters for massacre and rape of Indian Muslims.
@Rex Minor: I can't believe you Indians are seriously insulting Africans. Modi is ugly because he is a sinner, and his face shows it. Plenty of beautiful Africans also.
@Aisha: Yes I agree....have you also seen an uncanny resemblance between IMRAN and a horse face, or Nawaz and a Halloween pumpkin.
If you saw his speech in Madison...you will realise how far ahead has indian democracy moved from Ab Ayi..Ab Gayi...pakistani democracy
@Aisha: You have a valid point but unlike Gandhi he was seen in most proper dress. Besides apart from personal preference Indians unlike Africans have nicely cut Indo European features. Mr Obama should be grateful to receive the Indian leader who for a change is neither an economist nor a man of law but has the support of the poor masses at home.
Rex Minor
When hindus fast for their god, Pakistan will be celebrating its slaughtet fest.
I am so sorry to read comments by fellow Pakistanis. Many of us are unfortunately addicted to aristocratic-masochism being inflicted on us by our so called political leaders since our birth. Kudos to India to enable a working class person to be the head of state.
@Aftab Riaz:
Unless you are retarded and do not understand the context in which this remark was made, Modi was referring to the terrorism exported to India by its neighbor and is not home grown. And you know very well who that is. As for Baluchistan, India does not need to do anything. The trouble in that region, which has NEVER considered itself as part of Pakistan and has been under the latter's occupation, is bound to ferment and will spill out of the pot - with or without the lid! That is programmed because Pakistan, as a country, has failed and lacks the fundamentals of a state-nation. It was based on a lie and fiction. It was merely held together by Islam which is not the proper glue. You saw that in 1971 when a new state was born with the name of Bangladesh. You are also witnessing that today in many countries of the world where Muslims are killing Muslims. To succeed in life, dear (still) Pakistani, you have to offer people hope, faith and, above all, you have to be honest and accountable. You simply don't have these qualities.
Ugh! The utter shallowness of Pakistanis!
@Aftab Riaz: We understand your command on the english language is weak. But you needn't have advertised it thus to the world.
@Qamar: Oh you forget Pakistan
@Gp65: It is because we prefer mass leaders, underdogs who have slogged from bottom to top to reach high level. Not elites/royals/beauty kings and queens. If we wanted that not only would we have elected Rahul,Sachin pilot,jyotirao sycindia or vilas paswans son as our PM. Or possibly Bollywood brigade that has joined politics with oomph and style. But we are more into content, doers, simplistic, humble,grassroots pm and visionary figure. Modi clearly wanted low profile "doers" in his cabinet. Not fancy beauty conscious, make used elites who will sit in Ac and complain of too much work and Hatch eggs sitting on pending files. Seems like the other side of border is obsessed with show and fashion parade than politics. No wonder, last visit of indo pak meeting(Manmohan time) Visit Rabbani's Gucci bag and sun glasses worth $$ millions drew more attentions in media coverage then meeting content. And now I understand the secret why pakistan is the way..it is.
@BaglaBhagat:
Before you count, first pl. try to spell a simple name like Gandhi. He was/is/will be beyond comprehension of people like you. Gandhi never wanted division of the country.
@Qamar: Thanks for your concern. But India is neither Pakistan or Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt and Syria. So don't worry bro, we are pretty thick skinned for the world.
@Soofia Malik: That speaks power and respect, something which Pakistan lacks big time. But I am seriously enjoying how disturbed you are with this success of Modi.
@Aisha: This mentality of yours is why Bangladesh is now an independent state. Am sure Balochistan will be soon a new country in sub continent, cause I see you people have not changed.
@Soofia Malik:
No one makes fun of your fasting during Ramzan but you chose to make fun of Modi fasting during navratri. You expect others to respect your beliefs but are clearly unable o show respect for beliefs of others.
@Sundar: @Indian: @sharabi: @Alladitta:
Aisha's question is not just limited o her. When the Ondian cabinet was being sworn in - Sherry Rehman - a former minister and ambassador to USA was caught on camera describi ng it as 'wall to wall ugliness'. So if they consider elections as beauty contests - that is fine. As Indians we are not looking for good looks but governance from our leaders.
After a long time a person without a STRONG background has been elected as PM.
It is said "Jaise log honge waise he Hukumran unko milte hain".
Unfortunately the same is true abt Pakistan...The comments above prove it.
This is s time of Growth. opportunities and welfare of state and people. Work towards it. Geographical boundaries have already got defined based on World wars etc. Increased budget allocation on EDUCATION can do wonders and change old fashioned mindsets...Do it now...
Today Modi said, "Terrorism in India is exported, not home-grown, world will have to speak in one voice against it",
Well I agree with him, it is being exported to the neighbouring countries and specially in Balochistan. Recently last week weapon container was caught which was being transported to Balochistan. Worth 12 crore. But that news didnt break on all the news agencies but just few. I dont know why.
Modi speaks for Muslims and act against the Muslims. Everyone knows his politics. If he mean what he is saying then he has to arrest all RSS, Bajrangdal and VHP because they are always blaming Indian Muslims and spreading violence in Muslim community.
America is a praying mantis. Wherever she goes she leave that place barren. Look what the did to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt and now she is after Syria. India must be very careful. She always look for her interest only. She doesn't care for the friend.
wow he is like a Tiger and is doing great job for development.
@Aisha well madam if he is(let assume for a sec) so what? should we elect "Hritik Roshan" as a PM? Are we talking about Fashion & Modeling? BTW have you finished your homework today?
Look at the qualitative of the pakistani comments here. Are you guys so immature? You surely deserve politicians like Imran Khan, Canadian cleric!
@Aisha, you born stupid or is it the pakistani society?. @Soofia, he is on fast, so am I, so is most of India. Your tea seller axiom does not fits in anywhere, but never mind, so does most of the pakistani. Guess, it's your culture thing.
The comments above are just disgusting. Where are the so-called liberals now? Those who wax so eloquent about the fairness of Pak media and commentators...
Anyway, sticks and stones may break my bones etc.... So keep whining, see where that gets you.
@Soofia Malik: Dear Soofia, next time do vote for Fawed Khan. He is much better looking than Imran Qadri and Nawaz
@Aisha: OK fine he is ugly. So what ?
@Aisha: Really Aisha, could you not think of anything else. How old are you, 4-5 years age or even less?
@Aisha: still better than nawaz

What else to expect from a tea seller.
Its unbelievable how low USA has fallen from its hay-days. modi doesn't deserve to step on US soil and they are serving him tea at the White House.
modi pretends to fast just like ghandi. ghandi broke india into three. Let's see what modi's count is.
modi is so ugly, he makes even obama look good.
Q. What did they have for dinner?
Ans. Banana shake, banana pie and triple banana sundae.
